The History of the WEC/UFC Bantamweight Title
Looking back on the history of the division, they’ve had some great champions and contenders.
Eddie Wineland - Current Record: 21-10-1 - Won at WEC 20 when he beat Antonio Banuelos by 1st round TKO. Wouldn’t defend the title as he dropped it to Chase Beebe at WEC 26. Loss a bid to get his title back at UFC 165.
Chase Beebe - Current Record: 24-12-1 - Won the title from Eddie Wineland at WEC 26. Would defend it once at WEC 30 against Rani Yahya before losing the title to Miguel Torres at WEC 32.
Miguel Tores - Current Record: 43-7 - Won the belt at WEC 32 from Chase Beebe and would defend the title against Yoshiro Maeda, Manny Tapia, and Takeya Mizugaki before dropping the title to Brian Bowles at WEC 42, suffering his first KO loss in the process.
Brian Bowles - Current Record: 10-3 - Won the belt from Miguel Torres at WEC 42 via 1st round knockout. Would lose the title in his next fight when he broke his hand fighting Dominick Cruz. Loss his title eliminator back at UFC 139 against Urijah Faber.
Dominick Cruz - Current Record: 19-1 - Won the belt at WEC 47 when he beat Brian Bowles. He’d defend the WEC belt twice against Joseph Benavidez and Scott Jorgensen. After beating Jorgensen, he was awarded the inaugural UFC bantamweight title. He’d go on to defend the UFC belt against former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber and future UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson. A torn ACL and 3 years of rehab forced to Cruz to vacate the title.
Renan Barao - Current Record: 32-2 - Barao would win the interim title in a bout with Urijah Faber at UFC 149 after Cruz was forced to vacate. He’d defend the interim title against Michael McDonald and former WEC Bantamweight champ Eddie Wineland before a bout with Cruz was announced to unify the title at UFC 169. Cruz would be forced to pull out of the fight and Faber stepped in. Barao would win the bout by TKO in the first and would be promoted to UFC Bantamweight champion. He’d drop the title to TJ Dillashaw in his next bout at UFC 173.
TJ Dillashaw - Current Record: 10-2 - Dillashaw became only the 4th alumni from TUF to win the title when he knocked out Renan Barao in the 5th round at UFC 173 in what is considered to be one of the greatest upsets in MMA history. He’s set to make his first title defense in a rematch against Barao at UFC on Fox 16.
No one can say the Beebes don't fight the best fighters they can. If Shintaro wins he might find himself in the UFC with some of these new Asian signees.
Will Ribeiro vs. Chase Beebe Round 1
Round 2 Round 3
I wish Will Ribeiro was still able to fight. The former Brazilian Olympic team boxer and former top 10 bantamweight suffered a career ending injury as the result of a motorcycle accident that sent him into a coma. The guy could have been a stud at bantamweight with time. Today, he works as a referee and boxing coach that volunteers his time teaching boxing to impoverished youth.

Heiron Beeb Baker and Sparks victorious at Bellator 43
The end of Bellator season 4 is in sight as Welterweight tournament finalist Rick Hawn and Jay Heiron battled it in the tournament final. Ron Sparks returned to Bellator making short work of his opponet. Chase Beebe continues to rebound now on a 4 fight win streak. Former middleweight tournament finalist Bryan Baker TKO'd Joe Riggs. The night ended in a bit of controversy when Jay Heiron took a split decision over Rick Hawn. On my scorecard and many others on twitter and in the Bloodyelbow play by play thread had Hawn winning 29-28 or 30-27. The judges saw it otherwise ultimately giving it to Heiron. With this win Heiron will go on to fight Bellator Welterweight champion Ben Askren sometime in season 5. This is the first loss in Hawns pro mma carear up to that point he had won 11 straight. In the opening televised contest heavyweight slugger Ron Sparks, who looks like a shorter version of Brock Lesnar, took on heavyweight veteran Vince Lucero. Sparks is not known to take long to finish his opponent. After a short feeling out period Sparks kicked out one of Luceros legs and went into side control where he locked up a keylock for the victory. With this victory Sparks will most likely go into the Season 5 Heavyweight tournament and battle his way to a title fight with champion Cole Konrad. In a bit of bantamweight action to help deiced who would be in the upcoming tournament Chase Beebe took on Jose Vega.Beebe went for guillotines often in the first round eventually sinking one in on his third try submitting Vega. Beebe is on a resurgence since going on a 5 fight losing streak that saw him get Sherdog 2009 Robbery of the year with his loss to Mike Easton. Beebe now on a 4 fight win streak enters into Bellators season 5 bantamweight tournament. Bryan Baker returned to Bellator with his leukemia in full remission. In his way was tough MMA veteran Joe Riggs. The first round was reminiscent of the Eric Prindle Josh Burns heavyweight bout. Neither fighter got anything meaningful going just landing one off shots. In the 3rd though Baker was able to use his reach and unorthodoxed striking to TKO the tough Riggs. Baker has made a good case to be in the upcoming middleweight tournament. Besides it would give Sean Wheelock more chances to remind us that he survived leukemia You can Follow me on Twitter @MaZZM
