Thoughts on the NBA and its handling of extreme racism in the workplace - a very positive example for our children
Kudos to the NBA for doing the right thing in the Donald Sterling racism case. What a great example to our children of what is unacceptable in society and business!
It is important to remember that professional athletes are not the only role models in sports for our children. Franchise owners and league officials are also role models for how to conduct oneself in business. The events of this week are a great opportunity to teach our children about ethics in the business place, and what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior. As a father, I have learned that the larger the number of good examples we put in front of our children, the better off they will be in the future.
As owner of the Omaha Storm Chasers, it is never lost on me the responsibility that professional sports ownership has in the community. While we are a privately owned business, we are also in effect a publicly run entity, as our clients are an entire community of fans. Their feedback is what dictates how we run our business. Our goal is for the community to view our organization's behavior, professionalism and ability to positively impact the community, in a way that young people can emulate. This is more important than any game that is won or lost on the field.
