Omaha Selected for CBS Sports Network’s MiLB Game of the Week on July 17

Omaha Selected for CBS Sports Network’s MiLB Game of the Week on July 17 Game features Mike Jirschele number retirement with former manager in attendance.

OMAHA, Neb. — On July 17, the Omaha Storm Chasers will host the New Orleans Zephyrs in the Minor League Baseball™ Game of the Week on CBS Sports Network at 8:05 p.m. CST. Omaha has been selected as one of 15 MiLB™ teams to host a nationally televised game this season as part of an agreement announced on May 1 between MiLB and CBS Sports Network. The game features the number retirement of Mike Jirschele, with the former Omaha manager in attendance. “The National Champions will be on national television once again, and we are thrilled to showcase such a historic night for the Storm Chasers with the number retirement of our all-time great manager Mike Jirschele,” said Martie Cordaro, President and General Manager of the Omaha Storm Chasers. “The Game of the Week on CBS Sports Network is a major milestone for Minor League Baseball as a whole, and we are extremely proud for Werner Park to be a part of it.” This is the first time in MiLB’s 100 plus years of existence that multiple classifications of Minor League Baseball will be featured on a national TV broadcast. A total of 28 MiLB teams are being featured, as well as eight different leagues and more than 20 Major League Baseball affiliations. “We look forward to exposing even more fans to the excitement of Minor League Baseball, from top prospects working their way up to the major leagues to the fun and engaging elements our fans enjoy at our ballparks,” Minor League Baseball President & CEO Pat O’Conner said. Dick Gabriel and Doug Flynn will anchor each week’s matchup. Pacific Coast League Player of the Week:

Jimmy Paredes of the Omaha Storm Chasers and Kyle Hendricks of the Iowa Cubs have been named Pacific Coast League Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 12th-18th, the league office announced today.

Jimmy Paredes collected a career-high eight RBIs on May 12th against New Orleans and produced his first-ever cycle. The third baseman hit a fourth-inning grand slam followed by a triple in the sixth and a double in the seventh, before completing the first cycle in Werner Park history with a single in the bottom of the eighth. The cycle was the first for a Storm Chaser since Lorenzo Cain accomplished the feat on May 14, 2011. Paredes finished the week with a PCL-high 12 RBIs, while also accumulating seven runs scored, two stolen bases, and ten hits including five for extra-bases. In six games played he compiled a .400 batting average and .483 on-base percentage, helping Omaha to four wins.

Paredes, 25, is playing in his eighth professional season since signing with the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 2006 out of the Dominican Republic. He was acquired by the Royals on Feb. 17, 2014 when Kansas City selected him off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles. He has played in four games this season with the Royals, contributing two stolen bases and two runs. The Player of the Week accolade is his second in the PCL, with the previous coming on July 23, 2012, when he was a member of the Oklahoma City RedHawks.

Regarding Charlie Aliano’s lament about the state of baseball today (May 2 Pulse)

I wholeheartedly and respectfully disagree. In sports we tend to glorify history, but please don’t forget that baseball’s past includes an admitted cheater who made the Hall of Fame (Gaylord Perry), a player with the most hits banned from baseball for gambling (Pete Rose), and two owners who at one time were banned from running their teams (Marge Schott and George Steinbrenner). Meanwhile, nowhere in our country does baseball come in purer form than in Omaha. Between having the 2013 national champion Omaha Storm Chasers and hosting the College World Series, Omaha is everything that’s right about baseball. Gary Green, New York, N.Y.
