he's a scholar jock and she's a bimbo jock. match made in heaven.
scream, i love a story that says you know what, never mind all that bullshit, this is what we actually care about
zlh def dialed in most of this performance, but his best moments are when xie zheng is sad about his mom and trying to explain it all to changyu, like he showed up for work for ep36
scream, he fainted
one thing that makes bimbo changyu (i refuse to use himbo here; i feel like people think himbo is well meaning and bimbo is misogynist? actually, acting like the word used for men--a word created for men after bimbo already existed cause people din't want to use bimbo for them--is gender neutral and connotes harmless, fun ignorance while bimbo has some unsavory connections to it is what needs to be examined) work opposite xie zheng is that her non-traditional performance of womanhood helps her never question all the wild shit she sees xie zheng do.
oh, he can perfectly aim a piece of candy to make someone feet away from him trip and fall? makes sense, cause she can do it too. he can scale down a wall and run after a man for ten miles and then shoot him with an arrow as he falls off a cliff? seems legit, cause she can probably do it, too. he can protect changing while fighting off and killing a bunch of trained guards and then even though he's internally injured he can still get up and help her fight them off too? well, her dad was in the same line of business as he is, and her dad's the one who taught her to fight, so it makes total sense!
like, she can do a whole bunch of shit other women can't/don't and aren't expected to do, so when she meets someone (who's also not performing gender to the tee, *because* of his connection to her, *because* he agreed to be her matrilocal husband) who does things that he really shouldn't be able to do, she doesn't question it. you know who she reminds me of (wait for it)......catherine morland! what is it henry says about her?
"How very little trouble it can give you to understand the motive of other people’s actions. With you, it is not, How is such a one likely to be influenced, What is the inducement most likely to act upon such a person’s feelings, age, situation, and probable habits of life considered — but, How should I be influenced, What would be my inducement in acting so and so?"
people keep talking about how everyone knows yang zheng is xie zheng except changyu but just as much of a problem is that everyone knows changyu is the butcher girl who saved dozens of children from trafficking and stopped the enemy army from knowing about marquis wu'an's plan except for xie zheng, only she's not deliberately keeping it from him!
i mean i haven't gotten to the stunt changyu pulls that has everyone forgetting to drink their i love women juice but the fact that xie zheng's lie means that he's also keeping the man who massacred her entire village hostage and doesn't tell her.......the lie is him failing her as her husband and keeping sui yanqing's capture a secret is another kind of failure towards her
hate to say this (but do i?) but i think zlh was wildly miscast for this role. not for the domesticity in li'nan era, but for the war general, leader of armies stuff. his armor dwarfs him and watching men who look 10 years his senior be his subordinates requires an effort in terms of suspension of disbelief. i think he's way better suited for wuxia type fighting. but also maybe he isn't into this role that much? idk but everyone else is blowing him out of the water.
