This photo was taken almost 40 years ago. This is Tony Hsu, on his bike in the city he grew up in. Queens, New York. That was the bicycle 🚲 he would use — everyday, he’d fold the newspapers neatly, carry the papers in a large canvas bag and begin his paper route around his neighborhood. He inspires me everyday. He is the first one to tell you how important it is to tell and share family histories. We finally finished our #movieposter for my latest short film #OurWayHome #ShortFilm. A big big thank you to designer and artist, @maria_an who has believed in me and my film career since the day we met. She is incredibly creative, and also so patient. I'm so grateful that she came on board to help me with the poster for this film. Highly recommend her! I want to take the time to thank the incredible people - my friends, family, and colleagues for helping me on this endeavor. I wasn't planning on writing a long post, but maybe I should. Last year was a difficult year for me. Some of you may know why, some of you might not know anything about what I'm referring to. It wasn't until I met actor and now frequent collaborator @anthonyma , as he helped revive me, in my creativity and in remembering the reasons why I became a filmmaker 14 years ago. As my dad @hsu7769 was looking for new images to include in the Chinese version of his book #ChasingtheModern (#XuZhimo), he shared a few family photos with me - some old, some really old, and some new. There were two photos that came in one email -- one from his 3rd grade class in #Queens #newyork , and the other was this iconic photograph from the #1960s - with my father, my aunt, and a family friend. I showed it to many people I met up with at the time, and people always had this very visceral reaction to the photograph. I knew I had to tell a story around it. We had/have never seen #Asians or #AsianAmericans depicted in films or TV from this era/time period. That's what started the 3-month journey, to submit it for a deadline. I had never worked on a project faster in my life. It was empowering, given how the 1st half of 2017 went. I had never shot anything in New York, but I had an incredible experience doing so. I couldn't have made it without the entire team working together.
