oh hey ive finally seen i saw the tv glow and can comment on that :P

i DID love the movie a lot (is for me. i'll take it) and i not only saw accidental kin themes in it to a really heavy extent, i related to it really heavily as a disabled person who was getting much sicker at the time

while it's been stated from the creator that it's queer, especially trans, themeing iirc, i think it's kinda fair to take it as a sympathetic tone for other groups like that? like. I Dont See Why Not. even if accidental. it reads as heavily sympathetic.

it HAS been stated from the creator that the ending scene is owen looking inside themself and seeing the real world still there so like maybe VERY sympathetic. like. its a trans reading intentionally. but its pretty fucking sympathetic to other lives holy shit

Oh, that's a take I haven't seen before! (re: disability.) I may have to take your word for it, because... well. Frankly I wasn't engaged enough in the movie to remember much. (I watched it, then when it finished I wondered how much time I'd spent watching it, and immediately put on Interstellar, which I wound up LOVING, so it kinda knocked the first one right out of my brain.)

Maybe it's because the fictionkin reading eclipsed whatever trans allegory there was for me, but I think the only moment I saw "trans :)" was when he was wearing the dress and seemed to like it. But I'm not often good with subtlety, so it's entirely possible I just missed it?

But YEAH, the thing about art is that the audience is an active participant in consuming and interpreting it! "Eye of the beholder" and all that. Movies will speak to each of us in a way that's also reflective of our own experiences, and that's just the nature of Creative Endeavors The World Over.

I'm glad you enjoyed it and got so much out of it, though! I think I maybe just need a little more... pizzazz to get engaged. (And I didn't like the ending. I can't remember enough about it to know what you're referring to and what the creator meant by it, but I just remember feeling Really underwhelmed and disappointed.)

hello friend, someone in a chat was asking for recommendations on like, an omnibus of DC comics, preferably physical, and i figured i'd ask you if you knew of any good ones?

Oh man, I'm really more of a specialist in comics than a General Knowledge-Haver, but I'll share what I know!

Just about any character and potentially any series has trade paperbacks (TPB)! Those are great for having complete storylines, getting a taste of a character or creative team before deciding if you want to invest in Nicer Versions, and getting several issues at once instead of trying to build a collection of individual issues. (Plus, a lot of them have Bonus Content!)

DC also has the Archive Editions, which are basically much nicer trade paperbacks. Hardbound, touched up pages, and I believe they don't exclude issues like trades sometimes will? (Could be wrong.) There are also the actual Omnibuses (Omnibus Editions), which are freaking HUGE and Very Expensive, but they're a TON of issues compiled into one hardbound book!

So the thing is, a lot of these are a compilations of a specific series, I can't think off the top of my head if there are any things like this but for All General DC Stuff, aside from maybe the DC Comics Encyclopedia. Which is a real physical thing and while I wouldn't say it delves into the MOST obscure stuff, it does cover a good amount of history and some lesser-known characters/stories!

you know how i dont eat pork due to trump's removal of safety practices? yeah i found out recently he did that to poultry too. thats um. why listeria.

i've been steeping over what to do about chicken because it's in like all the soup i eat.

I wish I had Suggestions, but I am. Frankly too nervous about The Thought of Food Poisoning to put a lot of thought into it right now.

(I know listeria doesn't cause Food Poisoning the way salmonella and e. coli do, but my Phobia brain is like. "If there's listeria, what if there is also Bad^tm Kind of Food Poisoning contamination?")

((Also, I'm sure the fact that everything is produced in the same facilities owned by like 5 big companies has to do with the SWATH of the contamination and how many products it affects, but again. Don't know how to put A Lot of Thought Into That without triggering myself...))

heyyyy pal im sorry but your take on nuclear is way too far in the other direction. ): i don't fully disagree with you and there's a reason that my tag said to actually be cautious and that i felt like people had just petered out of improving things. but _as far as i fuckin knew in the past_ the point of nuclear is to improve the safety rather than give up.

and lately it feels like people have been giving up on going _in either direction_ or just pivoting to going BIG PLANT GOOD PUT AI IN IT (hate! hate! hate!) so like

on one hand i agree with you but i think just going fully black and white on it is the problem because we're kind of at the point where we're in the middle and we actually need to continue moving but people don't really do gray areas.

extends hand. come with me to grey area. maybe science can find something if we don't just sit on our asses and pretend everything is ok on one extreme or the other. not that i'm a nuclear physicist but i think the point of being a nuclear physicist is to continue learning and i want to support them finding safety measures.

I see what you're saying, I really do. And I wish I could say that you're right and the gray area offers safety.

But you know that OSHA saying? "Labor regulations are written in blood"? How many more people is it okay to sacrifice to find these solutions? How many more people have to die before we actually make it safe enough that nobody has to die to run these things? How many more people have to get cancer, and chemical burns, and COPD, and all the myriad diseases I've seen on the forms that are accepted for Workers' Comp because they're already known and accepted dangers of these things, before it's "safe enough"?

Making the actual towers safer for workers doesn't mitigate the environmental cost on the front end, either. How many more miles of earth have to be mined before we find a way to get the uranium out of there without digging for it? How many invertebrates and fish and microorganisms are going to be sacrificed before we find a way to run the towers without pumping intense amounts of radiation and chemical waste into the environment?

What you're asking for is sacrifice for the sake of science, in my eyes, and that is not something I can condone.

I hope I'm not coming across too harshly, I appreciate you wanting to have a balanced take. But I personally don't think that's balance, that's pouring more human blood and living creatures into the machine to make it work better.

It's not that it's not possible to make it better. It's that its history is already written in blood, and the more we Work for a Better Solution, the more we're going to fail in the findings and the cost will continue mounting. I don't think that's worth it.

butch is not a wlw-only term and is not even a woman-only term. i use it as one of my genders and i'm not the only one to use butch as a gender. if anyone has a problem with that they can directly send issue to me because i'm here i guess and i'm the one saying it not you :U it is typically a queer term. basically (slaps the nuance button a lot)

Sarah is a trans woman and that counts as queer, right? I know there are going to be Some People who think I'm doing something Wrong by letting her be a Trans Woman with Masculine Traits, but like. Trans folks don't have to perform gender for anyone. I'm Very Trans Agender with a presentation that very closely aligns with my agab, and I'm still agender, so if people want to complain about that, I will simply absorb their complaints and store it away for use in my next hex. lD

(Personally I think it's MORE insulting when a trans character, or that genderbend trend, presents the gender they transitioned to as a caricature of stereotypes. But then some people also find Refuge in the Camp. So I think my final take is: let people do what they want, it's their gender.)
