From the moment his alpha had died, Matthias knew how things were going to play out, and he knew none of the possible paths ended well. He'd had a choice to do the honorable thing and let a lot of people die, or do the dishonorable thing and save his pack from a madman. He'd done the dishonorable thing, and he stood by the choice. Given the opportunity to do it over, he wouldn't take it back.
That didn't make it any easier to start severing ties with the pack he'd been born into and served faithfully for hundreds of years. Nobody was forcing him to leave--not yet--but he knew it was a matter of time. They were pretty evenly split as far as wolves who wanted him to lead and ones he knew would never follow him again, and his pack didn't need more division right now. If they were really going to heal, he needed to leave. Permanently.
He'd recovered from the silver sickness, but his injuries healed almost as slow as a human's. They were beginning to scar over in the months since, and the pain was mostly a dull afterthought these days. He'd finally bitten the bullet this morning and started reaching out to other potential packs. There were no visits scheduled yet, but there were a few tentative connections. By the time he was through with dinner with Kit, he was exhausted and wrung-out, and he hadn't protested curling up on the couch with him, the warmth and scent of him more soothing than anything else right now. He didn't lie and say he was fine; he just accepted the comfort offered and was grateful for it.
