The dynamics on the ranch had changed over the eight weeks since the twins' torture of their victim had Robin pushing past Jesse when he came to check on her and sent her running into Jed's arms, desperate to hide from the screams. In his embrace, it was the first time she felt safe since she had been dragged to the ranch. After that, things seemed to change between them. At least, inside his bedroom. There, it was as if the rest of the house and Ashworth brothers were far away. That they were simply a woman and man dating again, quickly finding the attraction between them was still there. A hesitant kiss led to one thing and then another. It wasn't long until she was spending every night in his bed, though staying quiet had proved to be difficult at times.

For more than a week, Robin had found herself doubled over in the bathroom or lying in bed too nauseous to move. On more than one occasion, the smell of Abram's cooking made her rush from the house for fresh air to keep from being sick. A stomach bug she couldn't seem to shake is what she chalked it up to, doing her best to her distance from the family so they didn't catch it. The last thing she needed was a house full of nauseous cannibals. Not with how tired and fatigued she had left since she had first fallen ill, though the timing of when it would hit seemed odd. First thing in the morning or just after eating breakfast, at times right before lunch, but then perfectly fine the rest of the day. Oddest stomach bug...

Robin rested back against the pillows on Jed's bed, the soft breeze of the fan ghosting over her hot face. While she managed to keep breakfast down, the nausea had been horrible and fatigue draining. The ginger ale Jed had come to stock up on recently had worked some wonders with settling her stomach, slowly pushing herself to sit up by the time he returned.

"I'm okay. It's passing. I think at this point I should consider buying stock in ginger ale." She gave him a tired smile, inching her way towards the edge of the bed. "It might be a good investment if I don't get over this bug sometime soon."

The exam room felt smaller than it should have. Robin sat on the edge of the table, paper crinkling softly beneath her as she shifted, one foot hooked lightly against the rung while the other tapped once, then stilled. Jed sat nearby in the chair, close—but not crowding. Her hands stayed busy, fingers twisting together like if she kept moving, she wouldn’t have to think too hard about what they were waiting for.

“It’s probably nothing,” she said after a moment, voice careful but steady, like she was building the logic as she spoke it. “I’ve felt off for days. Nausea, tired, headaches… that could be anything.” A small breath left her, her gaze flicking briefly toward the door before dropping again. “There’s something going around. It could just be a stomach bug I can’t shake, or the flu starting weird.” She nodded faintly to herself, like that settled it. “That makes more sense.”

Her shoulders eased a fraction, but not fully. One hand came to rest lightly over her stomach without her realizing it, thumb brushing absently against the fabric of her shirt. “We jumped ahead yesterday,” she added, quieter now. “Stress does weird things. Bodies do weird things. It doesn’t have to mean…” She trailed off, not finishing it, like saying it out loud might make it real.

Then her gaze lifted to Jed, softer now, searching for something to anchor to. “It’s probably nothing,” she repeated, gentler this time—not convincing him. Convincing herself. "We should go."

Jed wasn't a very fanciful person. He couldn’t afford to be. If he got caught up thinking about what might be, he'd never be able to do what needed to be done. No point worrying about tomorrow when they still had to survive today. He wasn’t inhuman though, and the idea of a baby wasn't something he could so easily shake off. If it was true, it changed everything. They’d reached an uneasy stalemate with Robin at the ranch. One way or another, he had a feeling that was coming to an end. This was going to force an action of some kind, and there was no way of knowing what the fallout might be.

It was a risk even bringing her into town. At any moment, she might decide to run screaming to the nearest person about the horrors of the Ashworth ranch and how she'd been a captive there. Any life-loving person would take the chance while they had it. It was a gamble that she'd come to love him and Jesse. He couldn’t afford to dwell on it long. She would or she wouldn't, and he’d put it out of his mind once he'd decided to do it. He could make the decision. He couldn’t control what happened after.

It was safe to say he was absorbed in his own thoughts while they waited for the doctor, but he welcomed the distraction, even if she was talking to herself as much as him. "Probably," he agreed quietly because it was the most logical answer and also likely the one she most needed to hear. He rose from the chair, coming to stand by her and offering a hand to hold. He had a feeling she needed the reassurance right now. "If you're sick, you still need a doctor. Either way, I'll feel better knowing for sure. Won't you?"

Travel was a necessary part of running a multi-million dollar business, and like everything, there were upsides and downsides to it. One of the downsides of this trip was that his flight left at an obscene hour the next morning, so ungodly early that William didn't see the point in going to sleep at all. It would just make him slow and groggy if he tried. Sure, he could have chartered a private jet, but he needed everything to be above board for this deal. He was willing to sacrifice a little comfort to make that happen.

That evening found him seated at the hotel bar with his briefcase and a pile of papers to go over. He'd shed his jacket and tie and loosened the top button on his shirt, but that was as casual as he was willing to get in a public setting. He had standards. There was a half-empty glass of top shelf whiskey sitting forgotten, and he'd just set down his pen and stretched when someone took the empty seat next to him. People very rarely surprised William, but those weren't the words he was expecting to come out of his mouth. He took a moment to look him over, noting the very obvious gap in their ages but choosing not to comment on it. He admired the boldness of a direct approach. "Hello. Can I buy you a drink?"

It wasn't an approach he would have taken with just anyone, but he had a feeling this one would rise to the occasion. He offered a hand to shake, cuff sliding up to reveal a peek of the expensive gold watch on his wrist. "You can call me William. And you?"

Drew himself didn't have a full picture of it. All he knew was he'd been there and now he was here, and he hadn't even noticed he was starting to get bored with him. Not altogether surprising--if he'd learned anything, it was that nobody wanted anyone forever--but that didn't mean it didn't sting. His fault for getting too comfortable, for thinking it might last.
