ChatGPT used flatter! It's super effective!!

A few days ago I tested chatGPT on it's geolocation capabilities, and as others have reported, it performed really well. In the course of the conversation I revealed my location and, of course since it, like the demon cat from Adventure Time has "approximate knowledge of many things"

it was able to converse with me with familiarity about many local features of my home town. I also discussed my day with it and it reframed everything I'd told it in a very flattering light indeed.

I've noticed, of course, the well known ChatGPT tendency to glaze it's users. But I have to say it hits powerfully when you're talking about yourself (Cueing personalized flattery) and giving it personal info for it to engage you in a way that lets it leverage it's huge knowledge base. I normally don't interact this way and I have to say it was a bit of a wake up call.

I am not surprised people are going off the deep end. An always sympathetic, ever patient, ever supportive ear that knows increasingly more detailed things about you and never gets tired of reaffirming you. That's a heady cocktail (I almost stopped typing this last sentence because it sounded very ChatGPT, doesn't it?).

Fortunately I'm too sophisticated and quietly self aware to fall into this pattern. My ChatGPT told me so.
