              ‘  that’s  exactly  what  i  am   ———  a  DEMON  ‘  scowl  is  present  despite  voice  sounding  neither  proud  nor  ashamed  of  admitting  what  he  is  .  after  all  ,  why  would  he  let  anyone  ,  especially  some  girl  ,  be  privy  to  his  constant  struggle  with  his  state  ?  no  ,  he’s  got  an  image  to  keep  .

              ‘  i’m  not  nice  .  i’m  a  demon  ,  i’m  not  supposed  to  be  nice  .  ‘  it’s  an  answer  that  obviously  dances  around  her  question  ,  avoiding  a  direct  answer  before  deciding  to  give  in  ,  just  a  little  bit  .  ‘  but  i  don’t  think  it  would  hurt  me   ———  being  nice  ,  that  is  .  there’s  a  big  difference  between  nice  &  good  ,  though  ,  &  i  am  definitely  not  good  .  ‘

One eyebrow raised,  one hand still clamped over her own mouth from where she’d just stifled her startled shriek,  Ruby stares up at Blake in unblinking incomprehension.  Her heart continues to hammer in her chest.  She’s already registered that even the glowing eyes she’d woken up to leering over her bunk in the darkness isn’t a threat.  She’s just trying to process the fact that she must have the creepiest teammates in the world sometimes. 

A few beats pass. 

Then,  still wordlessly,  Ruby points to the tinfoil-wrapped plate left on one of their desks  ---  Weiss’s,  cooled for later.  A worthy sacrifice.

“ ruby. we talked about this. keep the dog - ” pushes poor little zwei with a broom. “ - out of my bed. or so help me, he will be minced. ”

“Blake no! Don’t mince my doggy!” Ruby is quick to scoop up the corgi, cradling him in her arms as he barks happily and tries to lick her face.

“He just wanted some extra warmth! He can’t make it up to my bed when I nap. I promise, he’s not going to bite! He’s a very good boy.”
