Of course, safe house didn’t mean empty house. “What the fuck are you all doing here?” Jason asked as he tossed his keys onto the side table. Tim, Steph, and Cass all looked back at him like they were the very picture of innocence. Ever since that first night, all three of them had decided they were invested in Danny’s well being. “Depends if the hearing aids worked,” Tim said. “Are we celebrating or commiserating?” “Celebrating,” Danny breathed out, all of the hard sounds of the word missing. The trio didn’t seem to mind (they never did) and a cheer went up. Danny started at the noise before he broke out in a grin. “Great, that means we don’t need to change the icing,” Steph said. She pulled the black lid off the sheet cake in the middle of the small table with a flourish. It read ‘happy anniversary’ in that bold blue frosting that was sure to stain everyone’s mouth in seconds. Jason just rubbed at the bridge of his nose. He didn’t say anything though, because Danny was laughing that soft laugh of his as he took in the absurdly off topic cake that they had gotten him. It was weird, but if it made Danny happy then it was good. “Only little slices right now,” Jason said, “otherwise everyone will be hyped on sugar and not eat dinner and I am not dealing with that.” Tim flipped Jason off.
