Women performing at house shows in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from June 6th - June 24th, 2014. Photos by Dakota Bahney. I love my city. I love the DIY music scene in my city. Most importantly, I love the way that the scene in which i participate fosters a growing inclusiveness and even prioritization of women and femme-identifying nonbinary people. It's a great feeling to go to a show in someone's living room or basement (or roof!) and see so many girls in the audience and on "stage", performing. When it comes to showgoers; house venue owners; musicians (both local and touring acts); photographers; poets; and artists, I think girls are getting to be very well-represented in Pittsburgh. Everything is still far from perfect, of course. There is always room for growth and there will always be things to work on. But I'd also like to celebrate how far I've watched the community progress from where it was when I first got involved in this music scene.
