So, I joined a loosely organized collaboration event on the dihua discord server- no assigned specific goal, or deadline, or output, just a randomly assigned partner with whom to collaborate on making whatever fanworks the two of you wanted.
This may be one of the most elaborate compositions I've ever done. Many thanks to @beneaththebrim who has been a lot of fun to chat with as we work on our projects.
As promised, I did not abandon the MXTX major arcana project! Next on the list is Lan Wangji as the Hermit, because the first five cards ended up being the other MCs and MLs, so I wanted to round out the set. I shall resume selecting next cards by poll with the next one.
Still working on cleaning up Binghe, but meanwhile I have at last started the pencils for Xie Lian as the Hanged Man, which was the winner in the What Should I Draw Next poll. I took most of his clothes off because figuring out how to make robes look right while upside down and tied up was hard.
Progress pics for my current wip, Hua Cheng as Death. I have departed pretty far from traditional tarot iconography here - he should be on a horse, and there should be skeletons.
Well, I took a lot longer than I wanted to get started on the next entry in the MXTX major arcana project, but here we are. I have always found Binghe unusually difficult to draw - I tend to need reference pics to get faces right, but I find the style of the donghua art very challenging to adapt to my style, and there aren't that many images of non-child Binghe in it anyway. Since this card is The Emperor, I wanted a less innocent\childish look without going full Bing-ge. But I got there eventually, I think.
Process pics for the second in my MXTX major arcana series, Wei Wuxian as the Magician. This is another of those card assignments that was a very easy decision.
With Twitter dying, I'm moving more of my process threads over here, but I'm going to try to do more images per reblog, so as to not get ridiculous.
My last poll for what I should work on voted for the experimental gold leaf Cang Lan Jue picture, so here we are with the pencils mostly completed.
So, while I know several other folks have begun\finished various mxtx themed tarot decks, I have still decided to start work on my own. It is not, at this time, planned to be a full deck, just a collection of the major arcana. (I don't have a long enough list of characters I'd like to draw that form a coherent group for a full deck; I could have done more than 22, but not 78.)
For artistic challenge, as much as any other reason, I've decided to use the traditional poses and iconography as the basis for the layout of each card. We'll see how that goes.
