floriangadsbyI realised I haven’t posted any photographs of the chawans I made for the six day shino firing. By all means they aren't something I’d normally make but Ken Matsuzaki asked me to throw a batch, alongside some yunomi teacups and sake ware. It was all very foreign to me compared to my usual making style yet I did enjoy it, I’ve watched Lisa Hammond throw teawares before and after having seen Ken too I must admit I was somewhat excited to try. From the throwing to the glazing and to the firing Ken told me about each step in detail, he gave me demonstrations of how he throws them and left me to it and when they were glazed with the multitude of shinos and buckets of iron he sat by my side and offered advice and thoughts on what might work on each particular pot. Out of all the making I’ve done out here these were by far the pots I put the most thought into, I was throwing with the intent of them being irregular, which is very different from how I normally work, seeing lines and grooves my hands left and simply letting them be. The one pictured was my favourite during the leather hard and bisque stage but there are others that really came into themselves once fired. I’ll post proper photographs when they arrive back home. This piece has a simple wash of iron around the base section, which protrudes slightly out from the upper portion. It was dipped entirely in shino, foot and all and finger marks showing. Ken uses the words purple and pink to describe the colours and that’s how they should be, the runs of white toward the rim are simply where the glaze was thicker. I’m bringing ten or so chawans, three of which will have boxes, signed and stamped, my favourites. One will be kept as a memory and the other two will make it onto my shop—if I can bear parting with them.
