chaya & isaac are turkish-sephardi from their father’s side (u can pry dönme alienage elves from my cold dead hands 👍) and ethiopian jewish on their mother’s side. the crypto-judaism angle that is to me inherently a part of the alienage experience of trying to preserve your beliefs after forced conversion is the focal point with them but the cultural specificities are there for those with eyes to see. if you know you know 🙂‍↕️

shiva’nasalin/salin is a little bit more obvious. my take on clan sabrae across the board is to lean more heavily into çepni (giresun gang 🔥) and roma (batı karadeniz style) culture to add specificity and surmount the incoherent blend that is bioware canon :)

sıla aldevir has lost her worldstate for the minute because veilguard is my enemy but “aldwirs” also got hit with the turk beam. aldevir clan is local to the region of arlathan and culturally türkmen. w heavyyyyyyyyy qunari influences coming from the direction of northern rivain/kont-aar who they have established trade relations with. hovering in that middle ground between animism/islam

semra adaar is probably the most obvious one off her name alone. my girl <33333 adaar is not a surname but a Role to me. vashoth don’t do family names (that’s an andrastianism) but name + role/daughter/son or _______ to identify somebody. in her case her father’s name is halil & her mother’s name is hafize (çökertme türküsünden tanırsın belki 🤭) she was raised by her “uncle” ibrahim who deserted the qun with his friends and encouraged from an early age to learn to fight to defend her freedom from anyone who might try to tear it away from her. when he’s gone, becoming a weapon/mercenary just feels like the natural conclusion to all of this (<- the reality of the situation is . different of course)

the thing about the landsmeet duel between chaya and loghain is that more than anything it is pulling back the curtain on the power dynamic between elves and nobles in ferelden. it’s about drawing to the fore and forcing the landsmeet to face the brutality and the inequality of it.

which is why the swords have to drop at the end. the blood has to get on their hands.

it has to be as horrifying and as ugly as the reality of living at the whim of a ruler who you are entirely expendable to.
