Just a reminder that ThriftBooks is literally a life saver when it comes to textbooks! Literally saved over $1000 on a psych textbook, $15 on geography, $36 on art app., $129 on genetics and $105 on evolution. Roughly $1300 I didnt have to spend on books.
Not to mention, they have a reading rewards program! Once you stack enough points up you qualify for a free book!
cheap and free textbooks so you can spend your money on things like food + soft kleenex
in honor of my return to university and inevitable poverty, here is a list of textbooks resources that is not outdated, nor a mess. i sorted and annotated the links, just for you. you’re welcome.
resources marked with an asterisk are links i actually recommend. especially among the free ebooks.... straight up, just use your library instead. i am giving you these resources, but i personally would trust few of them.
in short, i recommend a) googling the title + PDF. do this even if you have a book so you can use command+F to quickly find anything b) buy used c) google the title + chapter for blog posts, notes, and more.
in any case, here are more links to free/cheap textbook resources:
* your local library + its databases and ebooks :)
oh my god come on yall
used textbooks + rentals
* amazon
* halfpricebooks lets you look up multiple textbooks at once + lists by edition
* chegbooks gives you a 21-day refund garuntee which is dope bc it allows you to find out whether or not the textbook is even necessary
* thriftbooks
* alibris
* valore
* abe
* betterworld books donates books and money to literacy programs and grants with every purchase
ask students to buy off them. help a peer out.
price comparison + vendor sites
* amazon
* bookfinder
campusbooks
textsurf
bigwords
free ebooks (i’ll tell you straight up that i would not trust most of these resources if i were you. just go to your library, please.)
* google the title + pdf. i recommend this process even when you have a physical book so you can take advantage of command+F
* gutenberg focuses on older literature, out of copyright
* libertyfund focuses on liberal arts- humanities/politics/philosophy etc
textbook revolution
manybooks uses gutenberg + free self published books

freebookspot

blog posts and essays, especially for literature courses
if you truly truly can’t find a cheaper option, go rent that babe, if you can refrain from highlighting.
then, resell that bitch! have i sold my textbooks half through the semester for concert tickets? yes. have i been scammed by being forced to buy new unbound textbooks that you can’t resell? yes. i will fight whoever decided this shit. pull up. and yet, i’ve also had fucking amazing professors who just posted it all online for us for free. bless up.
any questions?
alright let’s go forth and study for a week and then dissolve into tears.
Is there a way to buy textbooks for college classes at a cheaper price?
Amazon rentals, PDF downloads, renting used books from your campus bookstore… check it out! @rudescience had a popular post about how to get textbook downloads, check it out!– Mimi
For those of you who want cheap college textbooks without having to sort through sketchy sites that are more likely to give your computer a virus than have an ebook version of your textbook, I recommend textbookrush.com valorebooks.com sccbooks.com and basic google to find your textbook
Free textbooks ft my study problems
Are you dedicated or crazy when you get two new textbooks on subjects you don’t even have classes for and reading that instead of doing actual homework...
Mood. I currently downloaded a free pdf for American Government and Intro to Forensics and Criminal Psychology just because.
I will be studying instead of writing an English paper simply because I find this more interesting and useful for deciding if I want to do this in the future. There’s also no forensic/criminal psych course in my college.
Free textbook pdfs:
http://gen.lib.rus.ec/
I found a 2017 copy of the intro to forensics and criminal psych on here and it works. omg, i wish i had this website sooner. You can find more literally almost any textbook on here than any other in my opinion.
College is expensive enough, don’t overpay for textbooks too.
How to complete University reading lists without going bankrupt
Okay, so I know that I am DEFINITELY not the only person who is shocked by how expensive all of the book on university reading lists seem to be. This has made super-curricular reading very difficult, as a lot of the non-fiction books range between £6.99-£9.99, and recommended textbooks can be anywhere from £24.99 upwards (no joke 😭). So, in light of my recent journey to read literally anything that has any relevance to my future degree at all- here is a list of four websites that can make that a bit more accessible!
1. eBay
Trusty old eBay! If you’re looking for cheap, early-edition textbooks to have a nose through in order to decide if your chosen subject is the right thing for you, then eBay is very useful. There are LOADS of cheap undergraduate textbooks available secondhand (or even new, if you’re lucky) for a lot less than their original price. Love a good bargain, I do.
2. worldofbooks
Slightly more trustworthy- no offense, eBay. Worldofbooks is a wonderful secondhand-book website! They have a wide variety of genres, and are especially useful for non-fictional reading that may crop up on reading lists. I ordered my copies of “The Selfish Gene’” and “The Disappearing Spoon” from here, and although a bit dusty, they were in tip-top condition. Except for one rather interesting message on the inside cover of “The Selfish Gene”: “THERE IS NO GOD!! ... merry christmas. x”
Honestly, I think it just adds to the charm, so I keep it in there for a giggle every time I open it to read. But please consider this wonderful website if you’re after any novels/plays/non-fiction for any reading lists. Delivery is FREE in the UK!
3. Book Depository
Book Depository is a bit unlike the others here, as some books are still full-priced. However, after briefly scanning the “Science and Geography” category, at least 90% of the books have been reduced from their RRP. Which is fab if you’re looking for something that’s still fairly mainstream/recently released, but at a lower price. Oh, and did I mention that they offer free worldwide delivery?
4. A Great Read
Yayyy for independent companies! This website is a small, family-run book business based in the UK, and similarly to Book Depository, almost everything has been reduced from the RRP, including fairly recent additions. Also, this one offers FREE UK delivery and returns. Sweet!
(... Also, despite being somewhat illegal, you can find a PDF of pretty much any textbook, play, novel, or non-fictional resource you fancy online now. So if all else fails and you’re really strapped for cash at the moment, do this!)
As we enter the second and final half of the 2017-2018 school year I’m sure some of you have textbooks you need to buy, so here are some tips I use to make book shopping a little cheaper.
