You knew that dating Oikawa means having patience and trusting him. The guy is a celebrity, with many girls dying to be in your place. But sometimes you wished he didn’t lean them on.
You and Tooru met during your first year, which was his also first year of high school. You were one of that rare freshmen that are in the starting lineup for the girl's volleyball team. You caught Oikawa’s attention when you did an unexpected setter’s dump, and he thought that was the coolest thing ever. It was also a bonus that you were extremely attractive and was super popular like him.
You were first introduced to Oikawa by your captain, and knowing his reputation, it wasn't a surprise when he constantly hit on you and flirted with you. You would never guess that he became one of your best friends after you comforted him when he put himself down for losing to Ushijima. Over time, you and Oikawa would constantly train with one another and eventually fell for each other.
You and Oikawa made it officially your second year and became the power couple of the school. Oikawa was a loving boyfriend, and although he can get annoying sometimes, you can't say that you hate him. You both share the same passion, which was even better.
Although you wished things stay the same, you knew that you and Oikawa would have to separate one day to pursue both of your guy's careers. Everything went downhill in the final semester of your high school year. Oikawa made a name for himself and became the most popular guy in town. It didn't make things easier that his fangirls constantly threatened you, and he wouldn't do anything about it. It was unbearable seeing your boyfriend paying more attention to a stranger than to you. You knew that eventually, he would make abandon you for someone else, although you wish it weren't true.
You wanted this to work, and maybe you just needed to talk to him and solve the issue. Of course, this would have been easier if you didn’t catch Oikawa with a girl from a rival team kissing. He was absolutely enjoying it, touching her everywhere. It took them at least five minute to notice that another presence was in the back of the gym. Oikawa was horrified when he saw the look on your face. He has never seen you look at anyone that way, and to think it was because of him was even scarier. You didn't even let him say a word; you just walked away.
During the game, you made sure to destroy the other team. Blocking every spike the other girl hit and scoring every time the ball was tossed to you. The game turned out to be one of the best performances ever, causing you to be invited to the female youth training camp.
After the game, Oikawa wanted to apologize to you; but seeing your emotionless face even though you were going to the nationals caused him to be a coward for once and run away from the scene. After that, you never spoke to him.
That was 5 years ago...
“Shit,” you cursed as you bandaged your arm. It was almost time for the Olympics, and you were training every day to ensure that your team wins. You weren't the captain and the ace for no reason. “Maybe go a little easier on yourself,” Iwaizumi says as he handed you a bottle of water and put a towel over your head. “I have to make sure that we win.” Iwaizumi raise his eyebrows and sat down next to you. “Or maybe you’re nervous about seeing a certain someone,” he said. You bite your lips and shook your head. “It was the past Hajime, I have completely forgotten about him.” Iwaizumi nodded, obviously not believing a single word that is coming out of your mouth. “You guys left things on a weird term; never comforted one another, it’s ok to feel this way.” He said and place a hand on your shoulder.
“Are you hitting on my girl coach?” You rolled your eyes when you hear the little brat’s voice. “In your dreams Miya,” you smirked. “Oh come on Y/N, our fans ship us so much we should make that happen.” You threw the water bottle at Atsumu’s head causing him to fall on his butt. “Nice try, I would never date a volleyball player, and let alone you.” You said as you made your way towards Atsumu to help him stand up. “Awe you’re hurting my feelings Y/N-chan.” You roll your eyes at Atsumu and basically let him fall on his butt again.
Sometimes the woman and the men's national team would hold meetings together, leading to training, but you and a couple of volleyball players always stay behind to catch up on the old-time. You met Atsumu at the Youth Training Camp and became close friends with him due to his obsession with Kageyama at that time, and you knew a particular player that was the same. You and Atsumu always kept in touch, and he was the first one to know what happened between you and Tooru. After that, he would cheer you up by always making meaningless flirtatious comments in hope of getting your mind off of Oikawa. Now you both play for the national team. Hinata and Kageyama also became your best friends because you both were from the same town, and you had known about them since high school. Sakusa, Ushijima, and Bokuto are also your friend but you don’t really talk to them as much since Sakusa was afraid of being close to people, Ushijima was more of a listener than a talker and Bokuto basically talks over you all the time but you still got along with them.
“Y/N-chan will you set for me?” Hinata shouted from the other side of the court. “She’s kind of busy right now” Atsumu smirks as he puts his arm around you. The boys all glared at him basically telling him to back off. “Of course my sweet child!” You shouted back and punch Atsumu in the stomach before running to Hinata. “Ugh traitor!” you heard Atsumu yelled from behind. “Tobio, why don’t you set for Hinata?” You asked. “Because he’s a loser.” You rolled your eyes at him and ruffle his hair before setting for Hinata. It never fails to surprise you how far Hinata Shoyo has come.
“Oi, are you going to be ok?” You heard Iwaizumi asked before you got in your car. “Of course, why wouldn’t I?” You smiled.
10 days later…. It was finally time for Olympics and your team was pump to see the challenges that were coming. Iwaizumi has warn you that Argentina was playing today and you were slightly nervous to see him play again. “Should I kiss you in front of him?” Atsumu asked as he playfully make a duck face. You glared at him and shove him away from you. “Aren’t you suppose to be preparing to play?” You asked. “I wanted to tell my girlfriend to go easy on the other team,” he says with that stupid grin on his face. “Quit calling me your girlfriend, I don’t need anymore dating rumors between us.” You said. “What’s the harm? You’ll be dating the most popular and hottest volleyball player.” He smirks. “Ahum I think they give that award to Tobio-kun last year,” you said causing him to clench his teeth. “Ugh, I need to go talk to Tobio about stealing all the girls,” he complains. “Besides, Bokuto’s cute friend is here, I don’t want him to think I’m taken.” You whispered. “Ohhh someone’s got a crush,” he smirks. You basically wanted to slap yourself for even telling him that. You out of anyone should know how much of a instigator Atsumu is. “Bokuto!!! Where is AKAASHIII?” Atsumu shouted drawing attention. You look over at your teammates who was laughing while the boys team was all confused. “I saw Bokuto going to the bathroom,” Ushijima said. Atsumu smirked down at you and started running, and you immediately chased after him.
“Yah! Atsumu you better not say anything!” You shouted. “Akaashi, Akaashi, Akaashi!” Atsumu kept repeating causing you to slightly blush. “What an asshole” you shouted and he stops to avoid trouble. “I’m just joking, but you know Akaashi is single right?” Atsumu nodges your forearm. “Ahum I said he was cute, I didn’t say I wanted to date him.” You said. “Yeah Ahum next time I’ll-“ Atsumu pauses and glares at something behind you. You frown and turn around only to make eye contact with a certain brunette. “Y/N-chan?”
Your eyes widen at the sight of him in front of you. He still looks like the boy from high school except he looked more mature and has gain much more muscle. Oikawa also took this time to observe you. To him you were still as beautiful as ever, and it feels like he was a high schooler all over again. “Oikawa,” you said causing him to smile. “Hey, it’s been a while,” he smiled.
It was about an hour before Oikawa has to play, but he needed this to happen, he needed to talk to you. After basically begging your annoying friend Atsumu to leave you two alone, he finally had you to himself again. Alone in a private space for the two of you to talk. “How have you been?” He nervously asked. “Good, I have been training a lot and have become stronger, all thanks to Hajime.” You smiled while playing with your finger. “That’s good, I heard so many great news from Iwai-Chan,” he said. “Oh have you now?” You laughed, mentally noting to beat him up. “Yeah, I kind of ask about you a lot” he said nervously. You nodded and look down at the table. “What about you?” You managed to ask. “Oh the same as always, just training,” he said. You nodded, and he blushed. This was awkward. “I am very proud of what you have achieved,” he compliments. “Sometimes I wished we could’ve kept in touch.” You smiled at him and agreed. “Yeah, we did kind of ignored one another our last year of high school.” Oikawa chuckled, and his smile faded when he saw you fidgeting with your fingers. You were scared. “I am sorry, about what happened,” he said. “I wish I could take it all back; I don’t know why I did that; you were the love of my life. I was foolish to ever hurt you. I couldn’t forgive myself or even say sorry because I was so ashamed of myself. I wish I had an excuse to why I did that, but I don’t; I am sorry.” You looked at him, and he was on the verge of tears. You honestly needed his apology. You have been waiting to hear him say he was sorry for letting you go and that he wished he could take it back. You haven’t been able to move on or date anyone because you needed the confirmation that Oikawa was out of your life. “We were both young Tooru; we make mistakes and learn from it. If it wasn’t for that, I don’t think we would ever be here. We both used that mistake to grow. I hope we both can find happiness.” Oikawa nodded and smiled at you. He was still in love with you, and you can tell, but this chapter of your life needed to end so you could move on. “Good luck on your game.”
You sat alone after Oikawa left to prepare for the game. You were speechless due to the amount of thoughts and emotions going through your head. It felt like you were finally free from the one chapter of your life that kept you from taking the next step. You knew Oikawa wished you guys can rekindle, but he also wanted to respect you and let you go. After all, he was the one that made the mistakes. “Japan Women National Volleyball Team and Brazil Women National Volleyball Team will play in 30 min,” you heard the announcer announce. You got up from your seat and exit the meeting room. You pulled out your phone only to see miss calls and numerous text from your teammates and the boys volleyball team. Of course Atsumu opened his mouth. While texting the group chat you accidentally bumped into someone causing your phone to drop and their materials to fall. “I am sorry,” you said while helping the person pick up their numerous papers and books. “It’s fine, I shouldn’t have run.” He chuckles. You look down at what you’re picking up and saw that the books are mangas from your favorite manga artist. You look at the person you bumped into, only to see a familiar jet black hair with glasses. You blushed and immediately looked away. “Thank you,” he said when you handed him the books. You nodded, trying your best not to stare at him. “You’re Y/N?” He asked after noticing your uniform. “Ah yes,” you chuckle. “Bokuto always talks about the famous female captain and ace,” he chuckles as he scratches the back of his neck. “And he always talks about his best friend as well,” you said. Akaashi chuckles and you both stare at one another. “It’s very nice to meet you.”
