AN: Hello, so I'm reposting this because it started out as a blurb but I have officially decided to continue it as a series. Chapter 2 is finished and I just wanted to reformat Chapter 1 before I posted it.
Also, this chapter was inspired by the idea of others being able to hear my extremely loud thoughts while taking a test. I just so happened to have taken a test yesterday, this idea always pops up in my mind now. Enjoy <3
P.S. the title discription will change as the story goes on.
Summary: The teacher said not talking during the test, but Jungkook can hear the voices of everyone in the classroom. And so can Jimin?
Chapter 1 Chapter 2
He enters the room out of breath. Everyone is already there and the test is about to start. He mentally curses himself for not waking up sooner. Doing his best to avoid the stares of his fellow classmates, Jungkook finds a table with a test on it and sits down.
“You have 90 minutes to complete your tests, no talking, no fidgeting, and absolutely no cheating! You may begin.” The smile his teacher gives the class is pure evil, but none the less they all open their booklets and begin to work.
Even though the teacher said no talking, Jungkook is beginning to feel overwhelmed by the buzz of chatter around him. “How are they able to be so loud and not get in trouble?” He wonders to himself. Daring to look up from his paper he sees his teacher sitting at the front of the room completely unfazed by what’s going on.
To further investigate he scans the room around him, only to find that no one is talking; or at least they don’t look like they are.
“Jeon Jungkook, is there a reason for your eyes not being on the test in front of you?”
“N-no sir.”
“Then get back to it, and don’t let me catch you looking around again.”
“Sorry, sir.”
When everyone’s focus is off of him and back to their tests, he takes a deep breath focusing on no particular area of his test sheet. “It makes no sense,” he thinks, “how is it everyone is talking and he doesn’t notice a thing? And how is it that they don’t even look like they’re saying a word?”
“It’s because they’re not, stupid.”
“Wait, what? Who said that? I swear I didn’t say that out loud.” He grasps both sides of his desk determined not to look up and see the person who’s speaking to him.
“Calm down Kook, it’s me Jimin. Don’t look up, don’t speak, just think. What you’re hearing is our thoughts. That’s why it looks like no one is actually speaking.”
He takes a moment to process Jimin’s words, could he really be hearing the thoughts of his classmates? “This is crazy, it’s not possible.”
“It is possible, this conversation we are having right now is proof of that. But, if you really don’t believe me, try to focus on one of the voices that you’re hearing.”
Again, Jungkook has to take a moment to let the words sink in before doing what the elder said. There are so many people talking all at once, how does he listen to just one of them? He tries to concentrate, when he was speaking to Jimin he couldn’t hear the rest of the voices, but when he stopped they all came flooding back to him. That’s it, he just needed to pick up on a couple words and then he’d be able to filter out the rest.
He closes his eyes trying to make sense of the buzzing: “It’s B, isn’t it? It has to be B. But A is basically the same answer, uggh this is so hard!”
“She’s basically shouting out answers, how the hell is this happening?”
“She’s not, Kook. You’re listening to her thoughts. Tune into some other people, you’ll see, everyone’s shouting out answers.”
Focusing again, he skims through voices like they’re tracks on a playlist.
“Who the hell decided that algebra was something we needed to know? I’m going to kill them.”
“Another C?! That 5 C’s in a row! It’s rigged.”
“I wonder what Hyuna got on question 7. Maybe I can ask her when the teacher’s not paying attention.”
“Alright, fine you’re right.” Jungkook think-shouts. “How do I make the voices stop, though? I’m never going to get the test done at this rate.”
“You’re kidding, right? You have 25 kids screaming the answers in your head and you’re saying you can’t finish the test? Really Kook, have I taught you nothing?”
He can’t control the smirk that spreads across his face. As always Jimin was right. He can’t count how many times his mischievous friend has given him advice or helped him out in moments like these when he was stressing himself out.
He still hadn’t come to terms with what was going on, but for now, he would just go with it. For the rest of the time he filtered through his classmate’s thoughts and picked the answers he agreed with. Maybe this was his blessing in disguise, he never did study for this test.
I found out I had synesthesia in fifth grade. I went on to be a pro cheater, and it was *literally* impossible to prove anything.
I, only for the purpose of cheating, got into those looms that you can make bracelets out of rubber bands with. I collected every letter and every number's color, about 30 in all because some numbers were the same as letters, plus black, gray, and white.
When we had a spelling test, I would stack bracelets, each with a word spelled out for easy access. I could usually tell which was which by the first letter/color. Sometimes, I even wrote out whole sentences, for classes like science and Social Studies. I did this by starting the sentence with Black, using gray for spaces, and ending it with white. This sounds fake, but I promise you it's all true.
I don't wanna encourage young synesthetes, but if you're ever dreading a test.... I've heard colorful friendship bracelets are trendy again.
