Reading about all the things the characters call the Darkling in the later books is so funny to me, because so much stuff in the later books feels like a direct reaction to criticisms of the earlier books - but done terribly wrong.

Like, I’ve already mentioned how Nina’s character feels like a direct reaction to people complaining that TGT has huge purity culture vibes, but she also made her 16 and the primary object of her lust is the fantasy equivalent of a nazi.

People calling the king the “real villain” and mentioning he’s a rapist? Checkmate antis, the Darkling is now a rapist too, and a groomer.

To many white characters in TGT? Checkmate antis, Zoya was Suli all along.

Female characters being punished narratively for being powerful? Checkmate antis, Zoya is now a Grisha Avatar and she can turn into a dragon and she’s the queen of Ravka now. #girlpower, amirite?

The Drüskelle are literally kidnapping children for being Grisha? Checkmate antis, that’s exactly what the Darkling was doing with the Second Army, too.  That’s why Grisha don’t have to go to the Little Palace anymore.

People don’t like Zoya? Well, guess what, she was a child bride before it was found out she’s Grisha and if you don’t like her or how I portrayed it, you condone child brides. Checkmate antis.

Darkling kinda had a point, though? Ha, I’ll write you all in, the cult of Starless Saint, a bunch of ignorant and mislead sycophants. Also, I’ll have characters repeatedly say that Darkling has never done a single good thing in his life. Checkmate antis.

Alina’s ending kinda sucked? Well, here, I’ll have her say how taking care of a dozen-or-so orphans heals her soul and therefore is a better choice for her than helping her people. Checkmate antis.
