chapter 5: every rule I had you breakin'

pairing: patrick mckinney x chrissy cunningham summary: patrick cannot catch a break at tonight's afterparty. no good deed of his seems to go unpunished. but chrissy still notices everything he does for her..... graphic above: a sneakpeak from this chapter's flashback

He could hardly see more than a few feet around him, the dim glow of the moon and stars his only ally this far into the trees. Her name bombarded his lips every so often in a desperate whisper, with hope for an answer by anything other than a hooting owl or vengeful gust of wind. Boots stomped in the distance, while Donna pleaded to be released, her words lost in the night as the officers closed in.

Patrick pushed on, not waiting to hear their reply. The slow lapping of the lake was audible now that he was getting closer to where Jason had said she could be. A great oak tree towered over a small clearing a few yards away. Rigid and leafless, the oak dominated the forest, its thick, solid trunk a testament to time. At the base of the regal tree, three roots jutted out in separate directions and cut into the dirt with streams of debris.

Something stirred on the west side of the trunk, shadows that looked like shuffling feet and frantic hands. A groan snuck through the brush.

“Chrissy?”

Trying to write a little each day has been hard but so rewarding. Having you as my cheerleader along the way is even better<3

I have done numerous paragraphs for those two angsty hurt teens who desperately need comfort and fluff. Here's a sneak peek of next chapter:

Patrick pushed on, not waiting to hear their reply. A groan slipped through the trees and he dashed over a thorn bush where a great big oak tree towered over a small clearing. Leafless and rigid, the oak still commanded the forest with its solid stature and regal appearance. Something stirred on the west side of the trunk, shadows that looked like shuffling feet and frantic hands. “Chrissy?”

Tell us more about cheertrick! We left them on a tiny cliffhanger (it seemed like they’d avoided getting in trouble from the cops after getting caught at the disastrous party… but what was waiting for Patrick at home???) I know you weren’t looking forward to writing a tough scene between Pat and his father but a) what did you want the ultimate outcome of that scene to be, and b) where would it lead? What happens next between Patrick and his parents, him and Jason, him and Chrissy? I don’t need snippets, you can just throw some half-formed ideas at me, and maybe it’ll help get you unblocked 💕

Oh my lanta my girl, this is one of those conundrums I'll talk ya to death over!!

As I was deliberating with you earlier, I had some very serious conflict in store for Pat and his dad, which I've found to be extremely emotionally taxing to try to write with the respect and gravity it's due.

SO! it will possibly (probably) happen off-screen so that I can more the story forward and still be happy with how the characters arcs are being fleshed out.

Ultimately I had hoped to show how awful his father really is when he think he knows what's best for Patrick- that he has a temper beyond what any child should witness/be a part of as he's been growing up, constantly criticized for not being an exact replica of him. By the end, we see Patrick fed up and traumatized, and an unapologetic father unwilling to see he'd the one whose fucked up worse.

Beyond that, Jason is a distant thought for a moment. He's more angry and isolating himself. Chrissy knows something is wrong because he's avoiding their meetups and is unaware of how bad it really is at the McKinney's..... she wants to thank him for rescuing her and she's worried about him, which means she might do something that surprise Pat.

Which is all I'll hint at for now;)

chapter summary : Patrick and the Tigers have an important game tonight to win to get closer to the championship. He tries to keep himself distracted from the fight last night and keep his feelings for Chrissy at bay, but with little success.
