Cassagnas - Saint-Germain de Calberte

The sun was back, and I walked the morning with a mountain guide from the alps who knew a lot about animals and plants, was a raging socialist and dyke but had unfortunately also conspiracy theories about vaccines. We stopped for lunch at a place with an incredible view over the southern Cevennes, the mediterranean seemed to be just behind the last summit. It was said to be a celtic cult site with a menhir and a stone tomb. Afterwards I continued alone through the chestnut forests.

Florac - Cassagnas

Finally back on the Stevenson trail again, with its good signs, well traced paths through the chestnuts and retired French people. Had a last look at the plateaus and their vultures, lost my nuts and dried fruits in the forest for the hogs to enjoy and finished in the valley of Cassagnas which Stevenson described as "dark and wild".

This weekend I decided to return to the Cevennes in October and finish the Stevenson. So I'm back to planning a hike and I love it. Since I finished in Florac in 2019 I have only about three days left on the Stevenson. I'm thinking about starting in Mende, following the Chemin Urbain V to Florac, spend a few days there to go up to the plateaus and then descend to St Jean du Gard.

Le Pont-de-Montvert - Florac

My last day of that hike. Part of me wanted to continue to the next summit and the one after that. But mostly I was tired and done with walking. I promised myself to return and finish the trail, though. In a good week I'll be there again!

Le Bleymard - Le Pont-de-Montvert (pt 1)

The hike up to the sommet de finiels, the highest point of the trail, was very wet and foggy. Those stones serve as guidance in these conditions as you can get lost on the high plaine. Igor the donkey was very brave.

Chasseradès - Le Bleymard

That day I discovered the joy of coming over the top of a mountain and thinking "yes, you're next" at the ones in the distance.

La Bastide - Chasseradès

Jean-Luc lent me his hiking sticks, the insoles I bought supported my feet, the brooms bloomed a lovely yellow and at the end of the day I was kindly asked to throw the ball, thank you, again.
