Renxiang never had a life of his own. His life belonged to his uncle. And to opera. And here's the thing - the stage was his prison and at the same time his salvation. The only place where he felt significant. Where he could be in some sense - himself.

And then he lost even that.

He lost the competition - and actually took it harder than he let on. Uncle sent him away. And then the whole abyss of helplessness fell upon him, when he could not protect either himself or the girl. And with a crippled leg, he had almost no chance of returning to the top.

The feeling of total helplessness makes us feel… as if we don't exist. And the fact that the girl also left was the last straw and the embodiment of this feeling - he's no longer matters

In that most important conversation with Xirui, when Renxiang is no longer trying to pretend to be someone else, he does not talk about a girl or love. He talks about art. And about his most terrifying fear - that nothing will remain of him, that he will be forgotten, disappear.

If he loved the girl so much, his mind would cling to the hope (in this case, quite realistic) - that it's just the family that does not allow her to see him. That she loves him and misses him, and maybe someday they can be together.

But she was his painkiller, not the meaning of life. And when this last thread broke, he was left alone with the closest and most alien person to him - himself.

This is the point. When you hide from the world for a very long time in self-defense, one day you will see a stranger in the mirror.

We often feel ugly when we don't see our own clear reflection. Behind the feeling "I'm ugly" is often hidden - "I feel helpless, worthless, confused, I don't even know who I am."

And then, in front of his fear of disappearing, completely dissolving, Renxiang does the last thing, as it seems to him, that left for him to remain whole in people's memory.

He plays the performance of his life to its logical end.

As if trying to break out of the circle of helplessness, completing it.

He couldn't choose anything in his life. But at least he could choose to die.

As I already wrote, throughout the drama, the story of the emperor and the concubine is played, in different variations. And usually either the emperor or the concubine dies at the end.

This script is very deeply rooted in the culture. Death is like the last way to save your soul when your world is falling apart.

Renxiang lives and dies according to this scenario.His small victory is that he appropriates this plot for himself, choosing his time and role. Taking up a sword that was never intended for him. This is his first and last rebellion.

But the drama also talks a lot about the need for development. That old scripts need to be changed. Xirui has this power - change the script.

Because it shouldn't be like that. A person is able to be "reborn" without dying. Rediscover yourself, find your place in another world.

But this requires great courage - to meet a stranger in the mirror and find out who he is.

And else - there must be a world that does not pin your role to you with nails, so that you can break away from it only in the last suicidal leap
