Scenes from Columbus, New York in early autumn of 2005. Columbus, a hamlet in northeastern Chenango County, prides its status as the first “Columbus” in the US. Each Columbus Day the residents would celebrate in the town park--a pretty spot much like the terrain in the top photo--with picnics, barbecue and tractor pulls. It’s a pretty safe bet there’s not much local enthusiasm for the proposed renaming of the holiday to honor Indigenous peoples.
The bottom photo shows the erstwhile Columbus Hotel, biggest structure in the settlement. At this time it’s vacant and disused. But back in the day it was a notable establishment where Kitty Wells, the Queen of Country Music, once performed. Recently it has been revived and reopened as the Columbus Public House.
