On the Lost Sunglasses

A poet, at this time

would write a poem

but all I have, for words

is that the ones I need,

are clearly unseen

I lost the sunglasses

I wanted you to gift me

and you did, with a smile

the one I cannot see–

with sunglasses or without

But I lost the sunglasses.

I’d lose more

to be with you, as before

when you could gift me sunglasses

and kiss my eyes into feeling

that truth which no one has seen

with sunglasses, or without.

This is a poem I wrote a few weeks after we had to split the first time. She had given me these sunglasses which I cherished, probably more because I felt they were an extension of our love than because of how cool they were. And they were very cool: black, with half mirror lenses. When I lost them I felt like our love and our future was so unclear, so out of sight. Yet since then we have come so far, seen so much, and walk together towards what’s beyond the horizon.
