Met Neil and Samantha yesterday. Mostly cus I wanted to have one of my wife's drawings signed. She's a huge hellspawn shipper. Also apparently some of her followers were at the con 😭 wish I could've met them.
Quite disappointing what's happening to Poppy Playtime. This game is a mixture of all the failures of FNAF and Garten of BanBan. It had a great idea, good atmosphere, the newer characters felt good in the beginning, but then they overstretched their concept. They kept going deeper (literally) to the point that the previous plot doesn't matter anymore.
They peaked with chapter 3 imo. Chapter 4 had its faults in the gameplay aspect, but at least the main characters were compelling and interesting. Chapter 5 introduces two new characters that feel more like cardboard cutouts than actual characters, and they aren't even involved in most of the chapter.
It spends too long on pointless puzzles that are either too simple to have any functional purpose or are overly convoluted in a way that breaks the illusion of it existing in the game's universe. It's like they forgot everything that made Doey work as a character in chapter 4. Lily was a much more interesting character, and her plot is only about a third of the chapter's content.
Even the older characters who've been with us for a while feel flat. When Huggy and Kissy finally meet face-to-face, I found myself saying, "why should I care about this?" My friend actually misinterpreted Huggy's reactions to seeing Kissy as him being angry because he associated her with the brainwashing, but then they meet and he realizes she's not bad. I had to tell them that was not the case, but that idea was so much more interesting than the dynamic we got between them.
The meat goop formula is getting stupid. The game already had an interesting mechanic with the Red Smoke, and it's almost like it doesn't matter anymore. The inclusion of this formula nonsense is stretching the limits of how many weird sci-fi concepts will go. It feels like Fazgoo all over again.
The most interesting parts of the story are only available in easily missable tapes. If someone isn't playing the game to collect all the extra secrets, they're missing a lot of context that makes the experience more meaningful. It doesn't help that they're tacking on new characters that clearly weren't there before.
The inclusion of new characters wouldn't be so bad if they felt like they always existed in the universe, but they've run out of breathing room to simply continue adding new characters without it feeling forced and underdeveloped. They have Boxy Boo, and yet he has never been a visible antagonist outside of tapes and Project Playtime. Even people who find the tapes may not know who he is, because he's only shown in a spinoff game and in one tape in an outside arg that was deleted years ago. Boxy Boo is interesting and has a lot of potential, some already established, and yet we never see him. Yet we are continuously handed new characters that we're supposed to care about.
At least in FNAF, with all its faults in storytelling and continuity, they have new characters due to new locations with newer themes. Poppy Playtime's ever growing roster feels more akin to Garten of BanBan, where the location stays the same yet the mural of characters keeps growing. It's obvious they're making it up as they go along, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's the lack of coherence in the narrative that breaks the continuity.
Now, they're making another damn chapter. It should've ended with 5, and they should've used their time more wisely. I'm honestly shocked this chapter isn't rated lower on Steam right now, but I'm sure it will drop exponentially. This chapter should've been the final showdown with the Prototype, it should've been where the lore wraps up, and it should've filled its time with actually compelling plot and mechanics instead of dragging it out for the sake of continuing the series.
Side note: Did they replace Baldwin Williams Jr. as Harley Sawyer's VA? The credits list a totally different person, but the voice sounds the same as before. Is that an error, or am I going crazy?
Edit: Nevermind, I was wrong about the voice thing, my dumb ass saw one of the voices for the other language variants and got confused lmao.
