Myriapoda Poll Round 1
The Kentucky Flat Millipede/Aromatic Cherry Millipede (Apheloria virginiensis) vs the Eastern Bark Centipede (Hemiscolopendra marginata)
cherry millipede
eastern bark centipede
extra fun stuff!
known by many names (with the one i use being the aromatic cherry millipede), this millipede is infamous for its chemical defense. cherry millipedes secret a cyanide compound that many say smells like maraschino cherries
the eastern bark centipede is pretty recognizable in the eastern united states and mexico due to it's blue-green back. this was the first centipede species observed with sexually dimorphic venom composition.
Little find today
@ismokedthatgoop submitted: Who is this man I found in Central Pennsylvania? He accosted me at work
By accosted do you mean slowly walked by and did not acknowledge you at all? Looks pretty aloof to me. This fella is definitely a cherry millipede and probably a black-and-gold flat millipede, Apheloria virginiensis, although I've never seen one with so little yellow (not counting the very yellow legs). But they do have some variation in color between individuals and the bright yellow legs fit the bill.
@revivedbadger submitted: I saw this red milipede crawling around at the great smoky mountains national park. Ive never seen a red one before!
Ohhhh what a great, stylish outfit! I love this pede. I won’t try to ID a species, there are too many similar-looking polydesmid millipedes in that area.
