It was so weird to be in school sometimes. It was like its own little world, all neatly arranged and divided between the teachers and the students and the grades and the nerds and the popular kids, even if Twin Peaks High School wasn’t really big enough to have big cliques, but you could still tell, and Laura still weaved through all those groups seamlessly while despising each and every one a little bit more every day.
She still couldn’t believe she’d been voted Homecoming queen. Or well. It wasn’t actually all that difficult to believe. It was just difficult to live.
And then there were classes, which were just feeling more and more pointless each day, but she still went to every single one. And this time - this time they were given assignments. In pairs.
“I can’t believe Mrs. Keane put us together. It’s almost like she thinks this is a social experiment.”
She said it quietly enough not to be overheard by their teacher when she moved her chair to share Audrey’s desk and sat down, leaning her head in one hand, watching her intently, wondering if she’d let herself be baited, even if the bait wasn’t all that big.
It wasn’t like it was a secret that they didn’t really like each other all that much, after all.
