Time to give my Magneplaner 1.7i’s on their @r._raus Ascension stands another chance to shine. Few SACD’s are as well recorded as Chesky’s. And even fewer small labels can line up a quartet of this caliber. Just look at those names. On name recognition alone, you know there’s a better than even chance thus is going to be good. Unfortunately it’s not good.....it’s GREAT! These guys sound like a working group, the telepathy between the musicians is uncanny for a one-off group. Ten standards, ten chances to shine. And shine they do. The sound is typical Chesky, three dimensional, holographic, and with excellent tone and timbre. Each musician occupies their own acoustic space. With Hargrove’s trumpet or flugelhorn center stage and up front (you can almost feel the spit). Piano is stage left (as I’m listening), drums to the center/right (spread out like a real drum kit), with bass center right, but behind the trumpet. This is another in the Chesky “New York Series” of SACD’s, and each is worth seeking out. But this one gets the nod simply due to the presence of the (recently) late Jimmy Cobb. Listening to this disc reproduced by my Oppo 105D universal disc player sending its signal down @_audioquest_ Earth interconnects to my Jeff Rowland Design Group Continuum S2 integrated amp through @_audioquest_ Oak speaker cables to my Magneplaner 1.7i planer speakers is a magical experience that never ceases to thrill me every time I fire it up. Great music on a great system is what life’s all about. Beginning my nights headphone listening time with this gem from the Chesky Jazz New York Sessions lineup of SACD’s. I’ve always had great admiration for Chesky recordings, but played through my Oppo BDP-105D to my Oppo HA-1 to my Audeze LCD-2C headphones I’ve come to a new and higher level of admiration. The sound of the church Chesky recorded in is so much clearer. And the instrumental separation is infinitely better. Give me a whole new appreciation for these discs. And this one, featuring Christian McBride, Javon Jackson, (the legendary) Jimmy Cobb and Cedar Walton is very special indeed. Great jazz, GREAT sound, and this is a great series of jazz recordings. On listening, one could be forgiven for assuming Cobb was the leader here (he isn’t, McBride is), so prominent is his playing. But outside of the sound, you could almost pass this off as a Blue Note recording (except it has a real soundstage and Chesky doesn’t box in the piano as RVG did), the level of musicianship being on par with those of Blue Note. But once you hear the superb Sonics, you’ll know it’s not. This is Chesky through and through. If you have this did in particular, or any of the New York Sessions, pull it out and give it a spin. If you don’t, more fool you. You’re missing out.
