I am so excited to announce that today is the release day of my 7th album as leader: The Charles Owens Quartet live at Smalls. This album means so much to me! I have been playing at @smallsjazzclub since it opened in 1994 and this will be my 3rd release recorded there with the first one being 21 years ago! I can’t say enough about the musicians who join me here. They are playing this music and their instruments at the highest level and I feel honored and privileged to have them in my band. Thank you @jmfrahm207 , @arihoenig , and @claffyclaffy from the bottom of my heart for your champion level playing. I’d like to specially thank Spike Wilner for agreeing to do this record and supporting me and being my dear friend for all these years. You have a special place in my heart always Spike. Thank you Mitch Borden for starting Smalls in 1994 and being an ultra important figure in my life as a musician and man. Much respect to @gbsjukejoint for the masterful recording they made. The Pace Report: "The Rebirth of a Modern Jazz Pianist" The Billy Childs Interview

Welcome to a very special edition of The Pace Report featuring Three-Time-Grammy Award winning pianist and arranger Billy Childs. He was in NYC recently performing new music from his latest Mack Avenue Release "Rebirth," his first straight-ahead piano jazz project in over a decade. His weeklong sold-out sets featured Steve Wilson on saxophones, Ari Hoenig on drums, and Hans Glaweischnig on bass.

Billy has been one of the most in-demand arrangers on the popular and jazz scene working with likes of Dianne Reeves, Sting, Chris Botti, Gladys Knight, Yo-Yo Ma, and David Foster. In 2000 he formed his critically-acclaimed Jazz Chamber Ensemble. In 2015 Billy won a Grammy for Best Arrangement Instruments and Vocals, "New York Tendaberry," from his successful Laura Nyro tribute album, "Map To The Treasure Reimagining Laura Nyro."

I down with Bill during his weeklong stint at the Jazz Standard to talk about his return to straight-ahead jazz, his musical influences, and how composing helped him develop into a better pianist.
