McCoy Tyner – McCoy Tyner Plays Ellington
McCoy Tyner Plays Ellington is the sixth album by legendary jazz pianist McCoy Tyner, recorded in December 1964 and released in 1965 on the Impulse! label. This record is a unique tribute to Duke Ellington, featuring Tyner's trademark powerful piano style alongside his bandmates from the classic John Coltrane Quartet. Key Details • Personnel: Tyner is joined by bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones. Four tracks also feature Latin percussionists Willie Rodriguez and Johnny Pacheco, adding a rhythmic flair typical of the mid-60s. • Track Highlights: The album includes standards like "Caravan," "Satin Doll," and "Solitude," as well as the then-unrecorded Ellington piece "Searchin'". • Significance: It was Tyner’s final album for Impulse! before moving to Blue Note Records. Modern CD and digital reissues often include bonus tracks such as "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)". The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 4 stars and stated: "An interesting project that works quite well. … This is an excellent outing that displays both Tyner's debt to the jazz tradition and his increasingly original style."
