“First service,” the umpire’s voice sounded clear and deafening in the silence. “Verstappen.”

Two men, across from each other. It felt like a western. The tension, the heaving breaths. 

It was romantic even. No one existed but them.

Like they were existing in a vacuum within the court. Themselves and the object of their affection sitting in the middle.

A charged silence filled the air. People were waiting for Max to serve. 

Others were looking at Checo’s half squat, his form soaked in sweat. 

She was absolutely shitting herself. 

Her stomach was in knots and her lower half ached.

Max’s eyes roved over the dark stubble already growing from his teammate’s face.

“You shaved this morning,” It was an appreciative jealousy that must have shined in his eyes from the way that Checo was looking at him. “How–?”

“My body is a temple.”

That didn’t even make much sense., but Max just left it how it was. “Hey, could you let me win tomorrow?”

“Let you win?” Max was sure that behind the dark sunglasses, Checo’s brown eyes were dancing. The grin on his face was enough to let him know of the fact. “You might beat me.”

He could, there was a chance that he could beat him. But Max didn’t want to take that risk. So he shrugged, eyeing the glass plate trophy that they received for boys’ doubles earlier. “My dad will be watching with my grandma. She’s been telling everybody in the retirement home about me.”

“For your grandmother? Of course!” He agreed like Max asked him to borrow a shirt. Not to throw the last match of the open.

“Really?”

“Yes.” He leveled a serious look over his sunglasses. “I wouldn’t do it for Jos, you know that.”

Max understood. He eyed the hotdog that Checo was my finishing, and decided to defend his dad. “He’s like that– well he’s a bit upset because he thinks that we are secretly together.”

The brunet stopped mid-chew. “We’re not?” he joked with his toothy smirk. The bastard.

The boys laughed off the moment. Max with more nervousness.

It was always hard to be next to someone that was so sure of himself. Despite knowing that Sergio was self-conscious of how he spoke English, Max felt overshadowed by his charming nature.

“Besides,” Checo said the words like they felt awkward on his tongue, yet not. Too much time in the Mark Rebellato Tennis Academy. “This is the only trophy that I wanted because we won it together.”

It warmed his cheeks to hear him say that.
