I got a notification on Instagram from a web series titled “Coming Home”, the tagline for the series was “What happens when your man is locked up?” Honestly, I would probably be single, I just don’t think I could be about that life, but nonetheless I had to watch this series.
I needed to watch this primarily out of curiosity, but also because Papoose is now the standard for the ride or die significant other, so I needed to know if this woman met the standard.
Coming Home had me curious and captivated me from the beginning. On the surface it is about a woman named Mahogany who is trying to be a faithful girlfriend while her man is in jail despite what everyone is telling her to let him go. As I watched a few more episodes the more the character development intrigued me.
The main character Mahogany is a strong independent woman that is extremely faithful to her man Donovan while he is locked up. The true ride or die chick that runs out of parties to take phone calls, sends him letters, and ignores everyone's input about her relationship, even her best friend Zoe. As the show goes on Mahogany's character is more developed, you realize that she is not as naive as you think.
Zoe, the best friend, is literally Mahogany’s yin to her yang. The way they approach life is so different, and as she says “she not rude, she’s honest”. The too honest friend, that everyone needs to check them when you need to be put into your place. She is the badass that will do anything for her friend, but only wants the best for her. Envision the girl, that always looks mean, but smiles as soon as you talk to her (well smiles sometimes depending on the person), that’s Zoe.
We’ve got these two best friends, then there is plot twist with characters Ryan and Calvin. You ever watch a show and don't like certain characters right off the back? That’s Ryan and Calvin for me. Ryan as fine as he is, (and I mean yasss!! fine), something just isn’t right(no spoilers) Calvin just seems sneaky, but at the same time he could be a good guy. I digress, I just can’t have anyone messing with Mahogany and Zoe (just started watching the show and already getting protective). Something tells me that they need each other in their lives.
It is an up and coming series, so once you start it, you can’t help but wonder what comes next. There is much more to the story besides a woman waiting for her man to come home. It is about a different type of love, loyalty to friends and lovers, trusting your instinct.
I promise this is not a show that will leave you disappointed. The best part is that it is just starting and there is so much more to come! Oh and I’ve come to the conclusion that no one can live up to the Papoose standard.
