CHHAYA // HINDU GODDESS OF SHADOW

“She is the Hindu personification and goddess of shadow, and a consort of Surya, the Hindu sun god. She is the shadow-image or reflection of Saranyu (Sanjna), the first wife of Surya. Chhaya was born from the shadow of Sanjna and replaced Sanjna in her house, after the latter temporarily left her husband.”

Shadows We Cast

Saranyu was Surya's only wife until she could not take her husband's brilliance and left to rest her eyes. So as to not offend the sun god she left her shadow (Chhaya) in her place. But on her return, she discovered that Chhaya had gained her own personality and had 2 children with Surya. The women forever had a complicated relationship, each other's exact image... but not.
