The Brain Scoop: 60 Second Specimens Murder by Birder

Every specimen has a story: this one was donated to the Field Museum by a murderer.

Before he was charged and convicted with the murder of 14-year-old Bobby Franks, Nathan Leopold was an active birder in the Chicago community. After his conviction and sentencing he donated his collection of birds and published checklists to the Field Museum, where they remain today.

Kirtland's Warblers (Setophaga kirtlandii) are relatively rare birds, and back in the 1920's little was known about their migration behavior or life histories. This specimen remains important today -- not just for its historical significance in connection with a convicted murderer -- but for the scientific value it provides as a voucher specimen for research.

A teen among six people shot in University Village Monday was initially presumed dead, police said.

4 April - “I think the baby’s dead.”

The pair were very young to already have two children. Darlene Rubio, only 19, had just given birth to 7 week old child, Paul Jr., the second she’d had with Paul Rubio.  Geraldine was a year and a half,  thankfully no longer an infant.  Darlene certainly had her hands full with the young children, but today she was getting a bit of a break.

Paul Jr. was left with his father while Darlene wen to visit a friend.  He sat the baby on the couch next to him, then turned on the television.  The only problem was that his son just wouldn’t stop crying.  Paul tried to ignore him, but soon his anger took over.

At her friend’s house, Darlene received a phone call from Paul.  “I think the baby’s dead.  I slapped him,” said Paul. Darlene rushed over, only to find the child dead on the couch, his face black and blue with bruises. Paul was nowhere to be found.  She quickly called the police, panicked about her dead child.

The police arrived and soon found Paul hiding in a closet in their home.  Both Paul and Darlene were held int eh murder of the young boy, but only Paul was charged with manslaughter.  After first claiming innocence, he soon plead guilty and received a sentence of 1-14 years in jail.
