The Joyce Foundation & 25 Years of Gun Violence Prevention Research Grant Making
This weekās blog is written by Dion McGill, SCY Communications and Community Outreach Manager.
For you loyal readers, youāll recall that a few weeks back, I wrote about the Joyce Foundation and a recent study they did, in which they reached out to experts and academic researchers in the fields of violence prevention, public health, and crime policy, to get their takes on theĀ ābest evidence-informed ideas about how the federal government can reduce gun violence.āĀ If you missed that post, go here to read it.Ā Ā
However, if youāre familiar with the gun violence prevention landscape, then you certainly wasnāt surprised by that study.Ā In fact, The Joyce Foundation has been funding research on gun violence prevention for 25 years.Ā
To quote the Joyce Foundationās About Us page:
The Joyce Foundation is a nonpartisan private foundation that invests in public policies and strategies to advance racial equity and economic mobility for the next generation in the Great Lakes region.
We support policy research, development, and advocacy in five areas: Education & Economic Mobility, Environment, Gun Violence Prevention & Justice Reform, Democracy, and Culture. Joyce focuses its grant making in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin, and partners with funders to explore promising policy solutions in other states or at the federal level.
The Joyce Foundation has budgeted 2018 charitable distributions of $50 million on assets of approximately $1 billion.
The Joyce Foundation was established in 1948, and in 1993, launched their Gun Violence Program, which has gone on to be known as the Gun Violence Prevention & Justice Reform Program. Since 1993, the Joyce Foundationās support for gun violence prevention research has been aĀ āconsistent through-line in their programās grant making strategy,āĀ and represents about one-third of their total spending.Ā
Recently, the foundation released a report that highlights the impact of their $32 million investment in gun violence prevention research.Ā As the Joyce Foundation said in a recent news release,
During a time when few other private funders invested and federal funding was nearly non-existent, Joyceās support has helped produce some of the most seminal research findings on gun violence prevention, building and sustaining the field.
We encourage you to go on over and check out the report.Ā We are appreciative to the Joyce Foundation for the work they have done, and continue to do.Ā If you work in the philanthropic sector, this report is a roadmap for how you can invest your money to build on what we already know, andĀ āenhance our shared commitment to public health and safety.āĀ

Reclaiming Armistice Day
This Sunday, November 11 is Veteranās Day and most are familiar with it as a day to honor those who have served our country. However ā November 11 was initially celebrated as Armistice Day, something that has been celebrated by organizations like Veterans For Peace for many years before itās rebrand by United States Congress following World War II. Armistice Day was born out of the effort to end all wars and violence at home and abroad. And not only is this important for those who have been part of our armed services as they are marginalized in the supports and resources are available to them, but to all groups of people who have had violent and traumatic experiences who are also lacking these things. Read more on the history of Armistice Day and how the Chicago chapter is celebrating this weekend.
The Road LessĀ Traveled
"Speak away the limits to heights of your existence / Be a witness, be a record, be a testament, a triumph / Set your poems flying in the glitter of the planets / Feed open mouths with truth, the truth is we are famished / The Universe is starving for the symphonies you play / Clarinets and thunder and the syllables you say / are the instruments: you are infinite. Stretch your hands to heaven / Let your throat throttle the rhythms of all your brethren / Your legacy is present, your history is now / You are the tenth degree of sound / You are the nephews of the sky"āfrom "a remix for remembrance (for my students)" by Kristiana Colón as printed in THE BREAKBEAT POETS: NEW AMERICAN POETRY IN THE AGE OF HIP-HOP āØāØāØ
