It's getting warm enough at night, and the chicks are getting big enough, that they *almost* don't need the heat lamp any more.
But the light attracts bugs at night, and they're having a BLAST hunting them.

Dude, my mom had the amazing idea of building a new, much bigger chick brooder out of coroplast and zip ties. One 8ft sheet of coroplast was enough to make it. I'm so happy with it. Why in the world did I not think of this sooner!?
Our new flock of Buckeye chicks (10 pullets, 2 cockerels) and 6 straight run Cayuga ducks.
The dog crates have been fine brooders. Because I put this one in the dining room for Judas Jr. to observe and interact with, I kept the bulb wattage low. In a cold basement, garage, or outbuilding, they’d need more. The heat lamp was securely zip-tied to the side of the crate through the vent holes. Anytime you set up a brooder, watch those lamps! Plastic melts, bedding ignites, chicks get burned. If they are close to the water, splashes onto the bulb can cause the glass to explode.
Trying out some chicken bling for the last remaining adult Buckeye. We’ll be selling more eggs in the future and cycling out older birds to prevent spotting and keep production up, so all adult birds will be colour coded by year.
March 24/25, 2017.

Brooder making tip. If you dislike the sharp edges of hardware cloth or whatever other mesh you use. You can use a glue gun to cover the edges and make them safe.
(Yes i know my window is lopsided, leave me alone! If it works it works!)
Here is what Beepers brooder looks like
Orginally their water bowl was their food bowl and their water was on a tupperware lid because they were so weak a deeper bowl could cause dorwning but they are good and strong now so they have a bigger food bowl and an actual bowl of water now.
They have a mirror that helps them feel less lonely since i havent been able to find them a friend around the same age. With Avian Influenza being confirmed in my state recently, they likely will just have to make due with socializing with my other older birds as they get bigger.

When Your Chick Knocks on the Door: The Strange Escape of Sis the Chicken
The other night, Ryan and I were sitting in the living room when we heard a random knock on our back door. Since that door only leads out to the enclosed porch—and the porch doesn’t have an exterior door—we did what any rational adults would do: ignored it and assumed we were losing our minds. Then it happened again. And again. By the third knock, I was fully convinced we had acquired a porch…
