Request: Mycroft (Sherlock BBC) with fem!reader. Teen Mycroft getting a crush on a girl (his age) who's really nice to Sherlock. He wants to date her but also not risk Sherlock losing someone. Some pining with a confession!
“Mum, why can’t I come with you?” Sherlock whined at his mother as he watched her check herself in the mirror as she waited for her husband to finish being ready upstairs. Mycroft kept his head in his book, knowing that eventually Sherlock would calm down.
“Because it’s meant to be a date between me and your father.” She chuckled, looking down at her youngest son who was hugging her waist. “We’ll be back in a few hours, I promise. And you’ll not be alone, you’ll have Mycroft and Y/N.” She reminds him. Mycroft sighed. Of course he was on babysitting duty- he was 15 after all, and Sherlock was only 8, though that didn’t make him much happier. He hoped that Sherlock would just go play in his room, but it was Sherlock after all and-
Wait, Y/N?
“Who’s Y/N?” Mycroft asked, putting his book down, getting up from the settee and going to see his mum in the hallway with Sherlock.
“You don’t know her? She’s in your year, Mycroft.” His mother commented as she put her earrings in. “She’s a lovely girl, she stopped some boys from picking on Sherlock the other week and she’s been walking him to and from school to make sure he’s safe.” She explained.
“Yeah, she’s really nice.” Sherlock smiled. Mycroft wasn’t surprised that he hadn’t met you since he had left the house before Sherlock and returned later than him due to school activities and other things, but it was a surprise that Sherlock hadn’t mentioned you to him- or maybe he had and Mycroft had just ignored him.
Just a moment later, there was a knock on the door, and Sherlock rushed to answer it, already knowing who was on the other side. He swung the door open, allowing Myrcoft to see you completely, though despite this, the one thing he saw first was your kind, welcoming smile. That was all it took for Mycroft to immediately catch feelings for you.
Mycroft found himself seeing you all the time now. You’d done such a great job babysitting Sherlock that you had been hired multiple times when his parents needed to spend some time away or simply time was tight and they wanted to be sure Sherlock wouldn’t be home alone. However, he’d also started to pay attention to his peers in school to seek you out, and to his surprise he had several lessons with you, and he made the conscious move to start talking to you in and out of school, until you were good friends, and soon you were spending more time at the Holmes House. You got along great with everyone, there wasn’t a thing that anyone disliked about you. So why was Mycroft so hesitant to express any romantic interest in you? Why was he scared to ask you out to the movies? Or bowling? Or just a picnic?
Sherlock.
It wasn’t that he was in the way- far from it. In fact it was kind of the opposite. Sherlock had taken a shine to you, and you were one of his only friends even if you were much older than him. You were a positive example and role model for the young Sherlock, and while Mycroft often pretended to be annoyed by the presence of his much younger sibling, he took his role of a big brother seriously, and he understood that if he was start a relationship with you and if it was to not work out, it could cause tenseness and force you away from Sherlock, even if he’d insisted it was fine and kept things neutral. At the end of the day, it was a gamble, and the question was if he was willing to risk it, and if he could live with himself if it didn’t work out.
“Mycroft?” He glanced up at his younger brother who was stood in the doorway of Mycroft’s room, swinging on the frame. “Y/N wants to talk to you on the phone.” He informed him before rushing off. That piqued Mycroft’s interest. Usually you had no reason to call- the only time you called the house in the past was to inform the family that something had come up or you were unwell and couldn’t babysit Sherlock, but you weren’t due to babysit tonight. He got up, heading downstairs to the phone in the kitchen, picking it up and holding it to his ear.
“Hello?” He asked.
“Hi Mycroft!” Your voice came through, confirming that Sherlock had been telling the truth, though he still wasn’t sure why you were calling. You sounded fine, so you weren’t ill, and you seemed to be in a good mood. “I know this is short notice, but I just got these tickets for Grease on the weekend and I was wondering if you wanted to go watch it with me?” You suggested it to him. Mycroft felt his heart jump into his throat. Were you asking him out? Or were you just being nice? Surely not, or you would have found a way to invite Sherlock was well… this was just for you two?
“Are you sure?” He asked, immediately regretting it, not wanting it to seem like he didn’t want to go. “I-I mean, not that I don’t want to go-”
“Sherlock said it’s fine, don’t worry.” You chuckled. “So is that a yes?” You asked him, from which he confirmed.
As the weekend came around, Mycroft felt overwhelmingly nervous. Despite already knowing you liked him, he was scared he’d mess up and make a bad impression. What if this was just a day out between two friends and he overstepped boundaries? What if it was a date and he overstepped boundaries? As he got dressed and double checking he was ready, he took a deep breath, hoping it would be alright, before there was a distant knocking and Sherlock calling that it was you. Mycroft fumbled for a moment to grab the thing he had bought just earlier that day, shoving it in his pocket before he rushed out his room to meet you at the door. Any anxiety seemed to mostly melt away when you smiled at him in greeting. “Hi Mycroft, ready to go?”
The night had relatively gone well. You’d caught a train into the city to see the musical, and even bought popcorn to share during it. Admittedly Mycroft didn’t know a thing about the show and didn’t really like musicals, but he’d just been happy to spend time alone with you, and you seemed happy to be there, which was more than enough. Soon the show wrapped up, and you gathered your things and left the theatre, starting you walk back to the train station. It was then that Mycroft realised that you two hadn’t had done a lot of talking. “Thank you for inviting me here.” He spoke up finally.
“Well thank you for coming with me, Mycroft! I had a great time, and it was nice to have some time alone with you.” You told him in return, your comment giving Mycroft a bit of hope that maybe you felt the same way. It was then he seemed to remember what he’d brought with him, and he went into his pocket, stopping in his walking, which made you stop to see what he was doing. He pulled the object from his pocket, and presented it to you.
“I-I got you this, I thought you might like it. I know it’s not much, but I saw it and thought of you.” He told you has he handed it to you, and awaited your response. You were quiet as you looked in your hands at what you had been handed. In your hand, was a simple necklace, mostly chain with a pearl or pendant every so often along it, all the way around. It had clearly been made a few years ago during the 80’s but it wasn’t bulky and was actually quite pretty. You eventually looked up at the anxious Mycroft, and smiled.
“I love it! Can you put it on me please?” You asked him.
“U-Um, yes of course!” He accepted, taking it back as you turned around and he carefully wrapped it around your neck and fastened it, before you turned back around, looking at it around your neck. “It suits you.” He complimented.
“Good, because I’m never taking it off.” You giggled, before wrapped your arm around his, giving him a peck on the cheek, before you pulled him along back to the train station, the interaction leaving the boy blushing the rest of the way home.
After dropping you off, Mycroft walked home himself, and as soon as he stepped inside, he was greeted by his family. “So, how’d it go?” His mother asked.
“Really well…” He told her, though he had no intention of spilling the details with his mother.
“Did you kiss her or what?” Sherlock blurted, making Mycroft go wide eyed in horror, which only made his little brother cackle with delight. “Something happened! Did you kiss her?”
“No!...she kissed me- on the cheek, but that’s all!” He said, trying to downplay it, but that was it. The start of the teasing and pushing from everyone in his family, including Sherlock, to arrange a second date.
Hope you like it! If you have any questions, please send them in!
