Regarding the Silence Suzuka Umamusume stuff with PETA, I understand everyone’s outrage but people are getting some details wrong (especially PETA, shocker).
Silence Suzuka wasn’t euthanized on the track, he suffered a fracture that was actually exacerbated because he decelerated in a way that actually prevented his jockey from getting hurt. They took him to the vet and deemed to euthanize him because the injury was beyond repair.
The horse that had to be euthanized on the track, that everyone was thinking of, was Rice Shower. Rice Shower was only six years old and running his last race on the 1995 Takarazuka Kinen (had to look up the race), when his jockey noticed that Rice was performing poorly and tried to get him to slow down. Rice instead wanted to win and sprinted forward which caused the leg break, and Rice was the one who was euthanized on the track.
And of course, what PETA doesn’t understand (and will never understand) was just how loved both of those horses were. Rice Shower’s jockey was so distraught that he stayed with him the whole time until he was euthanized.
I knew the thing about the first one, that was in the piece I read, they may have mentioned the other one, not entirely sure.
My memory can get a bit fuzzy when I get enraged about peta being peta.
This is all good information to have out there regardless though so thank you.
In the end the whole thing worked out nicely for the horses that were getting the donated grass and such, but that was before the puppy murdering club called peta stepped in I think, either way the donation site broke which while that's not the best outcome when it happens it also got a whole lot of other folks in there that likely donated to the cause that wouldn't have in the first place because of all the press it got in the end.
Again though I appreciate the information update, it's good to have as much of that as one can get.
