A sudden burst of summery heat this week in San Francisco seems to give us the perfect winter opportunity to head out for a nice Bay sail in our best boating threads and some cool fedoras. Except, I don’t have a sail boat, and I’ll have to ask someone to take me sailing instead. Oakland’s Same Girls seem to be on the same wavelength as me as they coo “take me sailing” on their new single, a yacht rock meets chill disco ray of lazy afternoon sunshine. Sailing’s wonky intoxicating, hazy twirling groove is reminiscent of Homeshake’s bedroom pop paired with a touch of Trails and Ways’ breezy indie pop, all laid out on languorous shimmering waves. If Emmecosta’s new single is named A Mountain From Us, the distance to that mountain must be a cool undulating, luxuriantly rippling ocean, in which we float in bliss to the Swedish duo’s chillwavey electronica. The song comes from the pair’s new EP, Velour, and it truly is a plushly woven, dreamy wafting selection from the four track release. A Mountain From Us is like Washed Out with a hint of pulsating Chromatics-like Italo disco darkness. Emmecosta states about their song:  "’Velour’ is the feeling of unshakable longing for a place we’ve never been. This is a specific form of wanderlust – a craving for a distant land or a deep feeling of ‘homesickness’ for a place we have never seen. We imagine distant places through small fragments: everyday life seen elsewhere. We are going through a strange sensation of disorientation, something magical seen from far away. Some serendipitous trawling on YouTube earlier today brought me to Phum Viphurit, a Thai born, New Zealand raised, and now Bangkok based singer songwriter. His latest single Long Gone is utterly enrapturing. It’s a chill grooving, buttery smooth, & jazzy rocking indie gem with the mellow charm of Tom Misch, the playful dalliance of Dan Croll, and Toro y Moi’s hazy sashays. Long Gone’s disarming music video even evokes Toro y Moi’s visuals. Phum Viphurit serenades us while dancing away to the dreamy jam. Long Gone is available from iTunes, here. It being such an ear perking first encounter with Phum, I just had to look up more of the fellow’s music. And I found his other tunes just as captivating and sublime. I could dig up very little information regarding Albert Ryan other than the fact that he likes soccer, good films, and culture (as stated on his Facebook page). The indie artist has cast an unshakable spell on me with his new single Never Around, a flushed bedroom pop meets hazy indie electronica dalliance fit for some dreamy introspection and foggy rumination. This enigmatic musician seems to have been quietly releasing plenteous fine tunes for an extended amount of time. For more daydream induction, float away to Runner, below.
