Ringing in the new semester with Chillfest
As CSU’s extended winter break came to a close, students, faculty and staff alike prepared to hunker down for the Spring 2021 semester. Cleveland State’s annual Chillfest started off the semester with a week of collaborative events hosted by the Department of Student Life.
In other years, Chillfest has featured series of event from student organizations like 1964 Society and the Campus Activities Board as well as double-header basketball games at the Wolstein Center. Though we’re taking a break from large gatherings for now, the CSU community still managed to show up in style for this annual celebration.
The Student Life Department kicked things off on Tuesday with a trivia challenge on their Instagram, and the theme was — what else? — CSU trivia! One of the questions asked who CSU’s president was before President Sands, and did you know that CSU has its own radio station? It’s called WCSB!
Tuesday also started Student Life’s collaboration with the Campus Activities Board (CAB) on giveaway tables in the Student Center. From Tuesday to Thursday, they were in the Student Center Atrium, handing out a bunch of free swag: T-shirts, water bottles, lanyards, stress balls, and — of course — masks, welcoming students back to campus for a healthy and successful semester. Student Life and CAB were joined by Dining Services on Tuesday because the 19th was National Popcorn Day, and they handed out popcorn kits from Cleveland favorite Campbell’s Popcorn.
On Tuesday night, the Rec Center kicked off their weekly game nights with a trivia challenge on Zoom. People could hop on and test their knowledge about the city of Cleveland for a chance to win $25. The Rec will be continuing these events each Tuesday night with a different game every week, so be on the lookout for their next one!
The Center of Student Involvement and Viking Outfitters have been partnering every year in an event called Bingo for Books, where students can play bingo for a chance to win a $200 gift card to the bookstore where they can purchase the textbooks they need for the upcoming semester. On Friday at noon, they will host a virtual version of Bingo for Books on Zoom.
Though we can’t watch them in person, we can still cheer on our fellow Vikings in the basketball games broadcasting live on Friday! The women play against Green Bay at 1:00 p.m. on ESPN+ and the men play against Milwaukee at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN2. Go Vikes!
If you haven’t stopped by Chillfest activities on campus, or checked out the various virtual events, there is still time. Visit https://www.csuohio.edu/studentlife/chillfest for the remaining line up through this Saturday.
Welcome back for spring semester!
