Chimney Han/Tommy Kinard, post bar scene from Bobby Begins Again, uuhhhh... high M/low E rating?, 2.5 k
read below or on ao3
"Alright, losers, I’m going home to my wife,” Hen announced, slapping the table top as she stood up.
Chimney and Tommy booed her in unison.
"She’s prettier than you and she smells better,” Hen said haughtily. “And you two are full on only talking in movie quotes, which is my cue to leave, anyway. Don’t get drunk on Cap’s dime, and get home safe.”
"Aww, she likes us,” Chimney sing-songed at Tommy.
Hen scoffed. “No, I’m just already regretting that I have to train someone new because of Sal. If I have to do that for a second person because of one of you, you’ll regret it.”
Tommy crossed his heart. “We’ll get home safe.”
"See you in two days,” Hen said, leaving them alone at the table.
They were already nursing a pair of beers, and Chimney slid out of the booth to go settle up the tab and get Cap’s card back. He tucked it in his back pocket before he sat down next to Tommy again, alcohol consumption knocking him a little off balance as he sat, bumping his arm up against Tommy’s.
"God, Cap’s so hot,” Chimney sighed, taking a sip of his beer.
Tommy nearly choked on his own beer. “Sorry, what?”
"He’s hot,” Chimney repeated, unaware of Tommy’s internal turmoil. “And a lot nicer than the fuckwads we’ve had in lately. I hope he sticks around.”
“I didn’t know you—” Tommy started.
"Huh?” Chimney looked at him. “No, but I’m secure enough about myself to know when someone’s hot, you know? Like Hen’s gorgeous, even though I know that would never happen.”
Tommy leaned a little closer, voice low. “You didn’t say that about Cap.”
Chimney shrugged. “I think he’s got a family, you know?”
Tommy drained his beer. “I think I’m going to head out, too.” He started towards the door.
"Hey, wait,” Chimney said, finishing the last of his beer and jogging out of the bar after Tommy. “Hey, Tommy, come on.”
"I gotta go, Howie,” Tommy shrugged Chimney’s hand off his arm.
"Hey, we just got this place cleaned up after Gerrard, don’t be a fucking dick about an off-hand comment,” Chimney snapped.
“It’s not—” Tommy took a deep breath and rolled his shoulders, looking like he was trying to gear himself up for something. “It’s not that you said it, it’s that you said it.”
"Huh?”
Tommy looked around the parking lot and jerked his head towards the corner of the building, away from the door and the streetlights.
Chimney followed him, waiting for Tommy to speak when they were tucked into the shadows together.
Tommy tucked his hands in his pockets and looked down at the sidewalk.
"I,” he started, “I’m, uh. I’m gay, Howie.”
"Oh,” Chimney blinked. “Then, why did you have a problem with me calling Cap hot?”
Tommy looked like he wanted to throw himself into traffic. “Because you think another man is hot.”
Chimney shook his head. “I still don’t get it,” he apologized.
Tommy leaned in and gently tilted Chimney’s chin up, leaning down to kiss him.
Chimney grabbed at his t-shirt, reaching up to meet his lips.
"Oh,” Chimney said when they separated. “Okay. Yeah. Alright.”
ever think that maybe Chimney was one of Tommy's first crushes on a man that was kind and made him want to be better?
trick or treat! 🎃🍬
slightly belated happy halloween! this one got me in my chimtommy feeling so, fingers crossed this little headcanon-fic hybrid is more treat than trick for you, anon.
Chim and Tommy, years down the line, drinking beers in lounge chairs and watching their various Buckleys and being the living distillation of the "hey look at us" "who'd have thought" "not me" clip. And even just a year or two ago Tommy would have said this was something he'd take to his grave, but their lives are so good, so settled, so entwined, they know each other so well now that he says,
"Hey. You wanna know something?"
And Chim says, "Probably."
And Tommy says, "I had such a crush on you back in the day," and Chim chokes on his beer a little.
"You did?" he gurgles and Tommy shrugs.
"You were basically the only nice person I knew," he says. "And you saw through my bullshit. And you were kind of a smoke show."
"Past tense is a little brutal there, bud."
Tommy can't quite believe how easy it is to laugh about it, how dangerous it doesn't feel when all those years ago Tommy had felt like he was juggling grenades every time his eyes stayed on Chim for more than ten seconds at a time.
"You never said," Chim says.
"Well, yeah. I barely knew I was into guys, but I knew you weren't, so."
More laughter. And then, "I'm into guys," he says, looking like Tommy should have known that somehow.
"Uh. What? Since when?"
"Since always, dummy. You shoulda said. Night shifts would have dragged a lot less."
Tommy cannot believe what he's hearing, and says so.
"Come on. You were big and sad and kind of a dick to me. Of course I would have."
Tommy winces. "I'm—"
"I'm just saying. You saw the type of women I chased after back then. I don't know why you'd think my taste in men would have been any better."
Ouch. But… "Fair."
"To might have beens," Chim says, and they tap the necks of their bottles together.
And it's not a regret of course, not for either of them because, well. Look at them. Who'd have thought? Neither of them could even have imagined. But it is a little shared piece of knowledge, a little kernel of warmth that gets added to the comfortable family-flavoured friendship that's grown between them because of the people they love.
Thinking about Buck going through boxes in Tommy’s garage—looking for something in particular or nosing around idk—and finding an entire banker’s box full of the firemen’s calendar from when Chimney was Mr. April
I'm interested in proposal
Oooh, Diana!! This is one I wish I could finish, because it's so beautiful inside my head and so hard to finish in writing! But! It's a beautiful story of a friendship between Tommy and Chim, in which Tommy confides in Chim that he is going to propose to Evan.
We all know how Chim is with secrets, so this will be very comedic.
I'm sure I've shared some of this snippet before, but it's a very cute moment!

"No. Nuh-uh."
Tommy's smile fades and he slowly closes the small box in his hand before squeezing it with mild apprehension. He had bought the ring earlier this week, and anticipation had been scratching under his skin, yearning to let the world know what he was ready for, and who with.
He had expected a different reaction from Howie.
"Wow, Howie."
"Nonononono! Man, that came out wrong!"
"I thought you most of all would be excit—"
"Oh, I am ecstatic!" Howie assures him, and Tommy raises a skeptical eyebrow at the shorter man as he puts the little box down securely into his pocket. "Do you know how long I've been waiting for this moment? For us to finally become the brothers we were destined to be, bonded by fate, guided by—"
"Okay, I think I get your point," Tommy chuckles, and the doubt he had felt a short moment ago slowly fades away. "So what's with the verbal protest? Is it the ring? Is it… do you think he'll hate it?"
"It's not the ring, Tommy. It's a beautiful ring, he will love the ring." He pauses. "It's a little bit about the ring."
Tommy frowns and squeezes the box now stored inside his pocket, as if to keep it safe from further offending words.
"It's the fact that I now have to face Buck every shift knowing that the ring exist," Howie groans in exasperation. "Do you know how terrible I am at keeping secrets? There won't be a bomb guy to vent to this time. This is too much pressure!"
"Bomb guy?"
"Long story. The point is, I'm gonna have to avoid him now, and as his captain, I'm not sure how to deal—"
"You can tell Maddie," Tommy offers sheepishly, and now second-guessing his decision to tell Howie. Maybe he should have gone to Maddie directly at first. Or Hen. Anyone who would make sure to keep Evan out of the loop without raising any suspicion to the cause.
"I appreciate that," Howie says, then looks at Tommy for a moment before getting up, spreading his arms with a big grin lighting up his face. "Hey, come here!" Tommy's smile widens too as he steps into Chimney’s arms and hugs him back. "Congrats, man. Marrying a Buckley is a privilege not many people gets to enjoy. Thankfully. I am happy for you. And for Buck. You both deserve this."
Touched by his words, Tommy gives Howie an extra squeeze before pulling away. "That means a lot," he says softly, and he huffs out a laugh. "Never would have imagined we'd be here twenty years ago."
"With your fat head and my annoying habit of trying to please everyone around me? Not likely," Howie laughs. "It's those Buckley's, man. There's something about them that just draws the best out of people," he says fondly, and Tommy hums in agreement of that statement. "So! What's the plan here? How are you going to pop the question?"
"Oh, I am not telling you that. I'd like to keep some of the mystery a secret."
"Yeah, that's fair."
the chimtommy friendship feels like the ultimate edge, and i am hopeful for payoff (in the form of them having an actual scene together).
they admire each other so much, like they literally never have anything but really lovely things to say about each other. “that tommy is so cool.” “i’m doing this for chimney.” their onscreen interaction has been slim over these past two seasons, because tommy’s interaction with anyone but buck has been slim, although it does seem like tommy is being more and more ingrained, so i am hoping that changes soon. they’ve known each other for twenty years… actually they have known each other longer than any of the other characters (excluding buck/maddie obviously). so there’s a potential there that is like, haunting me.
