I am writing this on the sleeper train on my way to Xi'An!

In equal parts excited and sorry to leave Beijing. Didn't have time to see much of the city besides the touristic stuff...

My itinerary was: breakfast tour around hutongs, a stroll up and down Wangfujing street, Forbidden City + Jingshan Park (skipped Tiananmen Square because the queues were huge), an opera performance, Great Wall at Mutianyu (no time to queue for the slide down but it was a perfect day nevertheless), Temple of Heaven, lunch with my previous Chinese teacher (who then took us to a massage parlour) and Shichahai.

I wish I could travel for 6 months instead of one!

The hotel couldn't have had a better location (in a hutong area less than 5 minutes from both the National Art Museum and Dongsi subway stations, within walkable distance to Jingshan and Wangfujin and across from Longfu commmercial center, where we watched the new year countdown).

The people working there couldn't have been nicer.

There was also free water, coffee and tea, and it was incredibly quiet, even when there was live music going on in Longfu across the street. They also arranged our trip to Mutianyu.

Only downsides: sometimes people smoked in the lobby and, if it went on for long, the smell reached our ground floor room. Also, the bathroom is very typical for Chinese hotels for what I have been seeing in other pictures, but it is a bit of a cultural shock. No, it's not a squat toilet...

The bathroom is that glass box in the middle of the room. Even though it's a bit "foggy" it's still see-through.

My roomate and I would just stay on our phones or be busy with something else while the other showered so it was not a deal breaker, but of course it's awkward anyway. So, you've been warned.

Also, there's no separation between the shower and the rest of the room, so everything gets wet. Hotels that are not like that write on the description that there is a "dry and wet separation" in their bathrooms, so you see it's not the norm.
