Name: Chincho
Debut: Super Mario Odyssey
Mario has had iconic ghosts and skeletons for years... but it took until 2017 to finally get a classic mummy! But if you ask me, it was well worth the wait. At least, I think so! I haven’t been alive long enough to have been waiting very long.
If you haven’t played Odyssey, you may be thinking... can another walking undead enemy really be unique from a Dry Bones? Well, it can! So take THAT!
Chinchos appear in large groups, emerging from the sands of the Sand Kingdom at night and underground. With a skillful throw of Cappy, it can be quite satisfying to watch them all poof into dust as your hat friend mows through a massive mummy mob and back. But as much as you may feel like you’ve accomplished something... you haven’t! When hit with Cappy, a Chincho’s soul will remain, and it will simply reassemble and continue chasing you.
So how can you defeat them for good? You gotta jump on them! But it’s not as easy as it sounds... these brittle old bones are not bouncy at all, so when you jump on one, you’ll land straight through to the ground. The good news is that this lets you defeat a few with one jump... but the bad news is that the rest of the horde will just keep chasing you as you fall! One of the most challenging enemies there is, if you ask me!
As you can tell, Chinchos are undead versions of Tosterenans, the fun-loving skeletons who inhabit the Sand Kingdom. So that must mean these skeletons are alive! Don’t think about it. Just kidding! Please think about it. It’s fun.
Chinchos also are a perfect example of something that makes Sand Kingdom so special: it draws inspiration from so many different real-world places! There’s Tostarena Town, based on Mexico; the Moe-Eyes, based on the Moai of Easter Island; the Jaxi, based on the Komainu of Japan; and then here’s Chincho, which takes a character based off of Mexican tradition, and makes it an Egyptian-style mummy on top of that!
Whatever direction Mario takes next, I sure hope the creativity and wonder of Odyssey continues to take center stage, and I hope Chinchos can become just as much of a series mainstay as Boo or Dry Bones!
