Today's post highlights the work of one of our former interns, Maria Adamson, who interned with us virtually this past fall as a part of the Cultural Fieldwork Initiative (CFI), a partnership with the Temple University College of Education Social Studies faculty and more than 30 regional cultural institutions. We have two new teaching activities that focus on identification papers of several Chinese people who were “on exhibit” in an ethnographic display in Philadelphia in 1899. You can use The Chinese Village Exhibit at the 1899 Export Exposition for high school, or Contextualizing a Photograph: On Exhibit at the “Chinese Village” for middle school, while teaching about immigration and the Chinese Exclusion Act, imperialism, or while teaching the history of anthropology, “otherness,” and living ethnological displays. Fujimoto family history- My paternal grandfather Masayoshi Fujimoto (1916-1987) was born in Rexburg Idaho to Japanese immigrants. When he was 4 the family returned to Japan. In 1933 at the age of 17 he went back to Idaho where he attended public school & farmed with his uncle & cousins. 1941 he was drafted into the army. He was married in 1945 to my grandmother Kiyoko Homma who was in #TuleLake #internmentcamps due to #executiveorder9066 signed by President #FDR Then he was discharged from the army & the Homma family was released from Tule Lake in 1946. He and his bride returned to his Idaho farm. Kiyoko 's family had owned the biggest chicken farm in Sacramento loosing it & everything else they owned when they were illegally imprisioned. Raised Buddhist, in 1954 he became Mormon. He wrote over forty volumes of daily diary entries, offering some insights into how 1 individual who was US born, raised & educated in Japan was able to go back & make accommodations through his social, agricultural, & religious experience in rural southeastern Idaho. Sometime between 1900-1906 Suematsu Fujimoto & oldest son Toji (Masayoshi's father) left their small farm in Kumamoto-ken, because of the #chineseexclusionact of 1882 it prevented Suematsu, a laborer, from going directly to US mainland, he sailed to Hawaii. Toji was young enough to convince authorities he was a student & sailed to US mailand, finding work on a Idaho sugar beet feild. Toji went from beet larborer to raising beets on contract for Utah & Idaho Sugar Co. to finally renting 180 acres of land raising alfalfa, grain, & sugar beets. W/ financial stability he sent for Suematsu in Hawaii & younger brother Tozabu who immigrated to Mexico in 1906. Toji traveled to Mexico by hopping trains to pick up & escort Tozabu over the boarder to Idaho. 1915 Toji goes to Seattle to marry Koma Tominaga a picture bride & also brings in 2 more brothers that brought w/ them a picture bride for Tozabu. 1916 my grandfather was born.
