For our second post in celebrating Lunar New Year, here is a couple of images from the publication entitled “潍坊民间孤本年画”(Folk New Year pictures extant in Weifang)

Weifang has been the capital for craft and folk art in northern China, and it is famous for producing Chinese New Year paintings.

新年快乐! The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the new moon that appears between January 21st and February 20th. This year, it started on January 22nd.  Chinese New Year lasts 16 days, but only the first seven days are considered a public holiday. Happy Lunar New Year!

Chinese New Year started on Sunday, January 22.

These images are from the publication entitled “潍坊民间孤本年画” (Folk New Year pictures extant in Weifang) in our Rübel Asiatic Research Collection.

Weifang is one of the Creative Cities of Craft and Folk Art recognized by UNESCO. The first kite took flight in Weifang 2400 years ago, and it became the center of Buddha statue making around the 5th and 6th centuries. Since the 18th century, Weifang has been the capital for craft and folk art in northern China. It is famous for producing kites, Chinese New Year paintings, paper cuttings, peach pit carvings, and silver inlaid paintings. The Chinese government has banned wildlife trade...for the time being. The ban comes as a result of the deadly Coronavirus outbreak that has been spreading across the globe over the last few days. The Coronavirus is a similar but stronger version of the SARS outbreak in 2003. Both viruses originated from the consumption of wild meat. The scapegoat for the 2002 outbreak was the masked palm civet and today the wildlife trade in Wuhan, China is as big as ever. China is the world’s largest market for wildlife products and the consumption of many endangered species is common trade. There's enough hullabaloo on the outside to warrant a 'plain' interior...which I have become quite fond of.
