The Foxgrove Road demo is the last time we hear Bowie perform this Feathers song. It was originally recorded in October 1968 (and thus is one of the three tracks on the demo which have already been into the studio). Then it was with his short lived Feathers project: three acoustic guitarists performing art-folk: Bowie, his lover Hermione Farthingale and Tony Hill. Each took one verse – in that order. Hill left the band right after the recording, so an old friend, John Hutchinson, was drafted in, and Hill’s verse overdubbed by Hutch. The recording – seen as a potential single – was never released, but was used in edited form in Bowie’s Love Your Till Tuesday film in February 1969, albeit editing out Bowie’s first verse! Hermione would leave the group (and Bowie) soon after that. And so we are left with just Bowie and Hutch…

Without doubt, the most curious of the music videos included in the Love You Till Tuesday film – if only because it doesn’t really feature Bowie! The song has a tortuous history. It was originally recorded by Bowie’s side-project, the art-folk band Turquoise. However, one of the members left straight after the studio session, so it was back to the studio a few days later with a new third member overdubbing the old third member’s vocals. The band renamed themselves Feathers: and now consisted of Bowie, Hermione and Hutch. Ching-a-Ling featured each of them taking a verse: first Bowie, then Hermione, then Hutch. The video – however – doesn’t include Bowie’s verse. I don’t know if it was filmed, and not included at the editing stage, or if it was never even filmed. Whatever, this makes the music video a very odd affair from the point of view of the purpose of the film – to promote Bowie. The video itself, however, is really cute – a hippy fest with each of the musicians sitting on some cushions playing their acoustic guitars. In this way, it is the most naturalistic of the music videos in the film. Again – odd!

Ching-a-Ling is a Bolanesque acoustic nonsense song composed for three voices – where each chorus builds upon the one before. It is a folk ballad written by Bowie, and an early indication of his future direction. The tune was part of the set of a short lived side project called Turquoise, then Feathers (the name change due to the third member, Tony Hill, leaving and being replaced by John Hutchinson) in late ’68, early ‘69. The other member of the band was Hermione Farthingale – an important relationship in Bowie’s life (see Letter to Hermione on Space Oddity). In November 1968 Turquoise (still with Hill) went into the studio to cut it as a potential back-door single. Bowie sang the first verse, Farthingale the second verse, and Hill the third. They also recorded the track Back to Where You’ve Never Been by Hill and with Hill on vocals. However, within days Hill left the band. So Bowie and producer Visconti returned to the studio and redid the third verse with Hutch. The B Side was dumped, but nowt became of the single. The Hill version, along with a demo and the B Side was thought lost, but turned up in the archives of Onward Music / Fly Records. Apparently an extract of the demo was shared on their website back in 2006, but I don’t have nor have not heard any of these. Accordingly, the only version available is the one featuring Bowie-Farthingale-Hutchinson. An edit (without Bowie’s first verse) was used in the Love You till Tuesday film. A later demo – more of which later – exists with just Bowie and Hutch. The real legacy of the track, however, is that its outro went on to inspire The Man Who Sold the World track, Saviour Machine!
