Scilla luciliae (Lucile’s glory-of-the-snow)
This little Spring flower is from the mountains of Turkey. After it flowers at this time of year, it becomes dormant. Technically this makes this species a ‘Spring ephemeral’, which refers to perennial plants that emerge quickly in the spring and die back to their underground parts after a short growth and reproduction phase. You always plant this bulb in the autumn.
When I was young, this plant was called Chionodoxa but DNA studies begun in 1999 over-turned this genus as a separate group and it is now classified as Scilla sect. Chionodoxa. Although originally described in the 1860′s, this plant demonstrates that even botany (perhaps the ‘stuffiest’ of the biological sciences) is open to new techniques and ideas.

It’s the Spring Equinox today and therefore the beginning of Spring - hurrah! My Spring bulbs, Scilla and chionodoxa, recognise the seasonal change. #spring #springequinox #chionodoxa #flowers🌸 #scilla (at Lewes, East Sussex) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMpFViGBa3B/?igshid=xv2ison8osmo
