The facade of the Concepción Cathedral in Concepción, Santa Cruz, Bolivia
The cathedral was built in the mid-1700s as part of a Jesuit mission in the Chiquitania region of what is now eastern Bolivia. It is one of six surviving cathedrals that were used to Catholicise and Hispanicise the indigenous Chiquitano people of that region. The cathedrals for the Chiquitano are unique among colonial-era cathedrals because they were architecturally designed to be a cultural fusion of both Catholic Spanish and indigenous Chiquitano designs and motifs.

It’s Not Just Brazil’s Amazon – Bolivia’s Vital Forests Are Burning Out of Control, Too
Up to 800,000 hectares of the unique Chiquitano forest were burned to the ground in Bolivia between August 18 and August 23. That’s more forest than is usually destroyed across the country in two years.
Experts say that it will take at least two centuries to repair the ecological damage done by the fires, while at least 500 species are said to be at risk from the flames.

A Year in Language, day 219: Chiquitano Chiquitano is a native and official language of Bolivia, a country whose constitution explicitly grants all indigenous languages that status. It is spoken by a little under 6,000 ethnic Chiquitanos whos live on the eastern side of the country, near the borders with Brazil and Paraguay. Chiquitano is a language isolate, having no known relatives. It was proposed to be a relative of the Jê languages, like Kaingang from yesterday, though this is no longer believed to be true. It is the fourth most commonly spoken indigenous language after Aymara, Guarani, and Quechua.
