In Defence of Nikki Maxwell
Disclaimer: I've only read up to book 11. I haven't read any recent books. This is completely based on my knowledge from the books I've read.
Yes, I'm aware that Dork Diaries is a kids book series, but I read it growing up and are now here to defend my girl Nikki.
And I'm just going to be honest with you: if you hate Nikki, but love Mackenzie and make excuses for her behaviour, then you're definitely the type of person to be a bystander when someone is getting bullied.
Right from the literal beginning, Mackenzie hated Nikki for no reason. We literally saw how Mackenzie's treatment of Nikki was negatively affecting her and almost made her move schools. It wasn't like the author had just randomly villanised her; we saw right from the beginning that Mackenzie hated Nikki, all because Mackenzie's jealous of her.
Mackenzie IS the villain in Nikki's story. You all say you love a girl like Mackenzie until you meet a girl like her. She's a spoiled little bitch who has consistently gone out of her way in the books to ruin Nikki's life. If you genuinely don't believe Mackenzie is the villain but Nikki is, then please go reread the books, because most of the stuff that Mackenzie has done to Nikki has gone past petty teenage drama.
And for the fun of it, here are some examples of the stuff she's done in the books:
Stole Nikki's diary (Book 9)
Stole the login to the Miss Know-It-All website and used it to write nasty responses to her classmates (Book 9)
Locked Nikki, Chloe and Zoey in a closet so that they wouldn't be able to perform in the ice skating show (Book 4)
Stole Nikki, Chloe and Zoey's ice skating costumes (Book 4)
Destroyed Nikki's dress at her party (Book 2)
Threw a dodge ball at Nikki's face that caused her to fall unconscious (that could've caused serious damage) (Book 8)
Stole Brandon's phone (Book 6)
Pushed her down a ski slope (WHICH COULD'VE KILLED HER MIND YOU) (Book 7)
Blamed Nikki for the bug video being spread around school when all Nikki had done was try to help her when the bug was in her hair (Book 9)
Attempted to get Nikki expelled (Book 9)
And that's just what I can remember 😭
And I'm aware that Mackenzie's parents are not the best and clearly enable her behaviour, but that's not an excuse. It's not Nikki's fault that Mackenzie's parents are terrible. Why should Nikki feel bad that Mackenzie's parents are enablers? All Mackenzie has ever done is be a massive bitch to her for no real reason. If that was me, I wouldn't give a fuck if the spoiled bitch who was bullying me had terrible parents.
And before you say, "well Nikki is whiny and ungrateful!", that's because Nikki is literally a teenage girl. Don't act like you weren't similar when you were that age. No one is perfect at that age. Applying unrealistic standards on a TEENAGE GIRL just because you don't like her is ridiculous.
Nikki is not perfect; that's the point. She's just a girl trying to get through school. Of course, she's going to act whiny and seem ungrateful - she literally admits it. She's going through an awkward phase in her life and it doesn't help that Mackenzie is constantly belittling her.
And I don't care if Nikki should've just "ignored" Mackenzie. How the fuck is she meant to ignore her when Mackenzie is always going out of her way to harass her? I think Nikki has every right to stand up to Mackenzie if all Mackenzie does is focus on her.
So stop blaming Nikki for not liking Mackenzie. Nikki has every right to dislike Mackenzie because of how she treats her. Nikki might act cringe, but she's a much better person than Mackenzie could ever be.
Nikki's a good person. The hate against her is ridiculous. Stop hating on a teenage girl just because she tends to act "cringy", cause I can guarantee you that we all act a little like Nikki.
