Mackenzie Hollister from Dork Diaries is kind of a cautionary tale of how hatred can blind you and what happens if you don't take accountability for your actions. An essay
As we know Mackenzie Hollister is the main antagonist of Dork Diaries and is the opposite of Nikki.
She's spoiled, she's vain and will do whatever it takes to win and crush competitors that get in her way.
It's also pointed out multiple times that she hates Nikki and we know why with her infamous "10 reasons on why I hate you list."
But I'm only going to talk about the two reasons she has written and why it stuck out to me.
One of the reasons she hates Nikki was that she put a bug on her hair.
Even though we can clearly see Nikki was just helping her take the bug out her hair.
But before she made that accusation, she made a conclusion that it was probably one of the showers she was forced to clean as punishment for slamming Nikki with a dodgeball causing her to fall unconscious.
I think this was Mackenzie realising that admitting to her mistakes means that she would have to take accountability, in a situation she herself has created, so Mackenzie quickly turned to the girl that sat behind her and put her in the situation of cleaning the showers.
Nikki says it herself after reading through Mackenzie's diary entries in book 9.
Mackenzie creates a lot of her own problems and blames them on others.
Probably due to her not facing consequences of her actions before, so it's always someone else's fault. Not her.
Or it could be that Mackenzie was still salty for being punished and wanted to take it out on someone regardless of if they're helping or not. And Nikki the one who put her in this situation, was the perfect target
Another reason she hates Nikki was that she won the 'Holiday on Ice show.' when she couldn't even skate.
And the thing is, Mackenzie was right about Nikki not being able to skate, her friends Chloe and Zoey could so it was a guaranteed loss on their part.
But Mackenzie was the one that caused them to win in the first place.
Mackenzie didn't have to do anything, she was good at skating. All she could've done was watch them fail during their act and then outclass them in every way In her act and possibly win in the process.
But despite the odds in her favour she decided to sabotage them by secretly getting rid of their fairy costumes and locking them in the storage room.
It backfired immediately after they found clown costumes and were able to get out with the help from Brandon and Brianna.
So when the girls did their act, it masked Nikki's every slip and every fall as intentional because they acted like clowns and made everyone laugh.
And because of this Nikki won the competition all because Mackenzie decided to take an initiative to sabotage them and it backfired on her hard. But she doesn't blame herself once for what happened, she hates Nikki because her plan didn't go the way she wanted.
I also want to talk about this one scene in book 11 after Nikki and Mackenzie made a truce to own Tiffany.
After Tiffany had her meltdown, she went to Mackenzie's locker and wrote bug girl. When Mackenzie finds out, she accuses Nikki immediately.
She doesn't even think about it, she jumped straight to conclusions because she did the same thing to Nikki during her first month at school and with how much Mackenzie hated her she let the real perpetrator get away with it.
Even though they had a truce, it fell apart because Mackenzie still had lingering hate for Nikki.
